On 2006's LIVE A LITTLE, singer/guitarist Joe Pernice leadshis New England-based cadre through another set of highly melodic indie-pop, proving yet again that he is one of the most sorely underrated songwriters of his generation. With this album, Pernice places the 1980s post-punk fixation of previous outings back in the attic, emerging with a bright, buoyant chamber-pop sound that recalls the band's lauded debut, OVERCOME BY HAPPINESS. (This is no coincidence, since this record shares the former disc's producer, Michael Deming.) Inaddition to charming, literate tunes such as "Somerville" and "Zero Refills," LIVE A LITTLE features a reworked versionof the desperate, lovesick "Grudge F***," one of Pernice's finest songs from his Scud Mountain Boys days, drawing an arc over the span of his remarkably consistent career.

High Gloss On The Magazine
The 6th album Live A Little by The Pernice Brothers sees them produced once again by Michael Deming who produced their first set Overcome By Happiness and previous work under The Scud Mountain Boys banner, so the strings are back on several tracks. In my view, this is their best work to date with not a duff track on the whole album. I suppose you would classify them under pop/rock as they have a bright and breezy early seventies feel to their music, one or two tracks reminded me of Squeeze. Closest to them these days would perhaps be The Jayhawks. Joe Pernice writes great songs, intelligent well-crafted lyrics and has the most clear easy listening voice. He is backed up by his brother Bob and brilliant guitarist Peyton Pinkerton who features well on here. Twelve tracks at just over 40 minutes but its the quality of the songs that stands out here, though it wasnt evident on its first hearing, took me three listens before I realised its class, hence the long wait for a review of this October 2006 release. The best track for me is the re-working of the 1998 Grudge F*** the finale which just ouses class, not far behind is Conscience Clean (Soldier boy) which along with Cruelty To Animals and its French (a-lou-etta) has me singing along with the melodies. This set is deserving of much more airplay.
