![]() | Rabies by Skinny Puppy
Buy new: £14.19 / Used from: £17.37 Controversial one this, as many fans of the band don't like it. They're wrong, it's awesome - one of the best albums of any genre & probably the quintessential industrial LP.
![]() | Reign in Blood by Slayer
Buy used from: £4.87 OK, so thrash metal isn't a particularly "in" genre. This, however, is the finest example of said genre ever & one of the finest half hour or so's ever recorded.
![]() | Ocean Beach by Red House Painters
Buy new: £14.19 / Used from: £11.19 It was a tough call whether to go with the rollercoaster album or this, to be honest. Buy both, though this one's a better LP - a brooding masterpiece with possibly their finest moment, "Shadows".
![]() | Caustic Grip/Gashed Senses and Crossfire by Front Line Assembly
Buy new: £20.99 / Used from: £9.29 OK, so I've cheated here. FLA are one of my favourites though, and since this has two classic albums on it this CD edges over any single LP from their back catalogue. Hard electro at its finest.
![]() | Preaching to the Perverted by Pigface
Buy new: £13.98 / Used from: £7.00 Again, I've cheated but this is actually a "best of" that actually lives up to its name. An utterly indispensible CD by one of the most important unsung bands of the past decade.
![]() | Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables: Limited Edition by Dead Kennedys
Buy new: £10.98 / Used from: £4.49 Anyone with even a passing interst in punk should own this. Features all the classics, including "Too Drunk..." on the bonus disc.
![]() | The Real Ramona by Throwing Muses
Buy used from: £4.19 How these were never a huge band mystifies me. The final LP with Tanya Donnelly as a member by, in my opinion, the best female fronted rock band of the past 20 years.
![]() | Let Love In by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
Buy new: £6.68 / Used from: £3.17 This was another tough one to call, but as well as being a masterpiece it's an ideal introduction to Cave's music, featuring beautiful ballads, harsh rock & the peerless "Red Right Hand".
![]() | Songs About Fucking by Big Black
Buy used from: £10.70 You may have heard of Steve Albini for his production work. This is just over half an hour of genius. A hardcore masterpiece.
![]() | 13 Songs by Fugazi
Buy new: £9.98 / Used from: £4.74 This is a great introduction to the only band I can think of actually deserve to be described as "seminal". You don't have to like punk to like this, either - it trancends the genre.
![]() | Hatful of Hollow by The Smiths
Buy used from: £8.98 It's not a "proper" LP by them but it's their best, and strangely more coherent than their "proper" albums, to boot.
![]() | Automatic by The Jesus and Mary Chain
Buy new: £8.79 / Used from: £1.49 For me, their best. Undoubtedly their most accessible & a thrilling rock & roll record.
![]() | Loveless by My Bloody Valentine
Buy used from: £4.07 It's hard to know what to say about this, really. It redifined what could be done with guitars & is phenomenally influential - if you don't own this what the hell are you waiting for?
![]() | Songs of Love and Hate by Godflesh
Buy used from: £11.43 Many think "Streetcleaner" is their finest hour but I disagree. Christ, you can even dance to it due to the use of breakbeats. If you like heavy music you shouldn't be without this, basically.
![]() | Must I Paint You a Picture - The Essential Billy Bragg by Billy Bragg
Buy new: £7.88 / Used from: £5.39 Another best of, but the tracks on this were actually chosen by fans through a poll on his website. A must, especially for those who can only remember him for his politics.
![]() | August & Everything After by Counting Crows
Buy new: £3.48 / Used from: £0.89 I don't care about whatever preconcieved notions people may have of this - it's a timeless classic by a band who deserve to be bigger than U2. So there.
![]() | Porcupine: 25th Anniversary Remastered & Expanded Edition by Echo & the Bunnymen
Buy new: £5.78 / Used from: £4.04 Another vastly underrated act, at their best. One listen to this & you understand where McCulloch gets that ludicrous ego of his from.
![]() | The Heart Of Saturday Night by Tom Waits
Buy new: £3.98 / Used from: £3.95 Tough to choose one LP by Tom Waits, but I love this. Everyone should have something by the man, seriously. And this is a great starting point.
![]() | Copper Blue by Sugar
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £3.73 I've chosen this over any Husker Du because I think it's the best thing he's ever done. Find out who Black Francis got his ideas from on this classic rock masterpiece.
![]() | Xtrmntr by Primal Scream
Buy new: £5.38 / Used from: £3.67 While "Screamadelica" is th tripper's fave, this has more balls, more groove & more experimentation. And Kevin Shields.
![]() | Infected by The The
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £4.54 A pop tour de force. Utterly essential in every way & as relevant today as it was when it was recorded, despite being a commentary on the 80's.
![]() | Amnesiac by Radiohead
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £1.40 "OK Computer" was voted best Album of all time. By "Q" readers, which says it all really. I think this one just has the edge over "Kid A" & "Hail To The Thief". Only just, mind. Absolutley awesome.
![]() | The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste by Ministry
Buy new: £6.78 / Used from: £2.86 Possibly the best Ministry line up on this one. Less metal than their work since, this features the classics "So What" & "Burning Inside". You owe it to yourself to get this.
![]() | The Full Sentence by Pigeonhed
Buy new: £11.98 / Used from: £3.87 An absolute corker, this one. Shawn Smith's peerless vocals on a funk/rock/soul beauty of an album. People reckon it sounds a bit like Prince. It does - at his best.
![]() | Double Damage by The Damage Manual
Buy used from: £16.95 A wet dream of a line up - Martin Atkins, Jah Wobble, Geordie Walker & Chris Connelly. This has both the "1" ep & the eponymous LP. Every home should have one.
