Product Description

In Aikido, Shioda demonstrates how the Basic Exercises that comprise the core teaching in Aikido will develop physical focus and teach the practitioner how to harness that focus for wider practical applications. This book primarily deals with the Basic Throws that form the early stages of Aikido practice and is a revised edition of a previous textbook that was not for sale to the public. This updated version includes a wealth of rare photographs of the author demonstrating the techniques, as well as a new section on Practical Application. This book should serve as a testament to the universality of Aikido, a martial art which, partly down to its emphasis of defense over attack, can be practiced by anyone, regardless of age. Practitioners will find this book an invaluable study resource, and discover that through Aikido practice they will foster a continual desire to improve themselves. As it includes almost all of the most important basic throws, it is valuable both as a study aid to practice and as a collection of reference material.

About the Author
Gozo Shioda (1915 - 1994), given 9th dan rank by Morihei Ueshiba in 1961, was the founder of Yoshinkan aikido. Shioda-sensei was a student of judo while young, and after being easily thrown by Ueshiba-sensei after a demonstration, became his student in 1932. He also studied aikijutsu. He has become known as one of the more "fiery" or "vigorous" people of aikido history.

Useful Reference for Beginners3
I bought this for my son to use as he is just starting out with Aikido. However, the actual book isn't as easy to use as the description would have you believe. I was after a very clear step-by-step guide that my son would find interesting. Unfortunately this was not it. Probably a good buy for adults.
