Amazon.co.uk Review
Given the lullaby that Richard Thompson wrote to commemorate his son's birth ("There's nothing at the end of the rainbow/There's nothing to grow up for anymore"), Teddy Thompson turned out reasonably cheerful. True, when the British folk-rock legend's son sings "It's not so much that you left/It's that you didn't come back" on "A Step Behind", you can hear echoes of dad's droll delivery, melancholy modes and waltz-time signatures. But Teddy's voice is sweeter than his pop's, whether crooning on the Crowded House-like "Wake Up", harmonising with Rufus Wainwright on "So Easy" or even dropping allusions to letter bombs and freebasing on the wry "Thanks A Lot". With tasteful musical assistance from producer Joe Henry's band (as well as dad Richard), this eponymous debut is a low-key introduction to a rock offspring worth hearing. --Bill Forman
CD Description
When your parents are Richard and Linda Thompson, the pressure to release a classic debut album is unreasonably high. Although this set of engaging folk-pop tunes does not reach classic status, it demonstrates an undeniable ear for melody and strong arrangements, and displays Thompson's appealinglyearnest vocals. Joe Henry proves a sympathetic producer, creating space and depth for Thompson's spare rocking.
Customer Reviews
Delightful chip of the old block!
I must admit I was a bit apprehensive about buying this, being a big fan of his father...But I need'nt have worried. Teddy is a class songwriter, wonderful songs that have you humming along straight away, plus some lovely guitar work from Dad thrown in for good measure...Shame Mother could'nt make it along for a vocal performance. I was also suprised to find it was produced by another fav of mine Joe Henry...Well worth checking out too if you like this. Stunning Debut, looking forward to more.... Now does anybody recommend Rufus Wainwright?
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
Teddy Thompson has a talent that deserves independent recognition - he's far more than just 'Richard's son' (or indeed, the equally under-rated Linda's son), as this album shows. His songs are deft and the lyrics are as neat and clever as the melodies, delivered in an intimate, warm style that will make a tiny private concert hall of your car stereo. This is a collection of beautiful songs about love and loss and dealing with your own demons that you'll hear in the back of your head for days. And he's even better live. Why no Mercury Music Prize nomination??
