up up and away!
in the 1990's there was an excellent batman cartoon, set in a very film noir environment, that really did justice to the character. this is a superman series from the same producers, done in a similar animation style. although metropolis is a lot sunnier and less noirish than gotham.
This is the first three episodes of the show, edited together into one 60 minute long feature. And it covers all of the superman origin, from the infant kal el leaving krypton [a beautifully understated and moving scene as one man realises the planet is about to explode] to his arrival on earth and then in metropolis, and his debut and meeting with lois lane and lex luthor. Dana delaney voices a very attractive and beatifully drawn lois and clancy brown voices the best version of lex ever. he has just the right tone of understated menace.
the extras on the disc are lots of clips showing each of the main characters, and a guide on how to draw superman. both are probably better suited to younger viewers.
It's a shame these episodes are edited together but you only lose the credits, and I'd rather have a set of all the individual episodes. but these are so good it rates 5/5
Strong and colourful
This is an excellent retelling of the beginning of the Superman story.
First third - Superman is a baby and Krypton is heading for disaster.
Second - his youth in Kansas.
Third - action packed antics in the city and the introduction of Lex Luther as the enemy.
Particularly good about this DVD is the animation and the vivid, strong colours used. It is a pleasure to watch.
standard superman
this tells the classic tale of supermans origins. the animation isn't as good as the JLA movies and I thought the krypton bit was too drawn out and too little time spent on clark kent as a young man in kanas and lois lane - clark kent interaction. the lex in this ( and in the JLA) is the best lex ever strong, intelligent and very evil and much more a match for superman than in most of the soppy hollywood movies. lots of action. great for kids
