Amazon.co.uk Review
The mysterious Mister X is on the move and it's up to London's top detectives to stop him. Scotland Yard has all the ingredients of an enjoyable, light-hearted game of cat and mouse. Cops and robbers must negotiate their way around Central London, trading their allocations of bus, underground and taxi tickets for passage around a game board with 199 locations.
One contestant takes on the role of Mister X and attempts to outwit his would-be captors; lying low under London Bridge, running riot in Regent's Park or bowling bravely through Buckingham Palace. The remaining participants, a minimum of two detectives, must rely on all their super-sleuth skills to catch their man.
For the most part Mister X travels around in secret but he is obliged to "emerge" briefly at specified intervals in the game to reveal his whereabouts. This provokes a frantic pursuit as the detectives follow various clues that may or may not lead to the fugitive's new location.
The hide-and-seek nature of the game makes for fine family entertainment although younger players may find such tactical searching requires a little too much patience. Ultimately there's much fun to be had in the role of the elusive Mister X and wannabe detectives will relish the prospect of collaring the bad guy. Ages 10 to adult. --David Thwaites

Scotland Yard - Detectives chase the elusive Mr. X!!!!!!
This board game is simply great great fun. Based upon a map of central London, upto 5 detectives chase Mr. X - the baddie - around London either by taxi, bus or underground (subway in US parlance). Mr. X only appears on the board at specific intervals at which point the detectives make plans to 'close the net'. He then disappears off the map and moves around. All that the detectives know is whether he takes a taxi or a bus or the underground. That's until Mr. X decides to use one of his black cards that lets him move without letting the detectives know what mode of transport he took!!!!! And, sometimes he can take a double move, and he alone can travel up the river Thames. Just when the detectives think they have him snared, Mr. X emerges on the other side of town, amazing the detectives with his deviousness. The game ends when either one of the detectives land on the spot occupied by Mr. X - the detectives win, or the detectives run out of travel tickets - Mr. X wins.
This is an easy game to learn to play (age 6-99), and the instructions are clear and fun to read. From an educational perspective, it scores in respect to communication and logic skills. Not much is learnt about the landmarks of London although some are mentioned.
If there is a draw back, it would be that as the detectives are allowed to talk to eachother about how they will plan the capture of Mr. X, it is possible that one person gets bossy and tells the other detectives where to move to. Nevertheless, this could be construed as valuable learning aid to assertiveness..
A great game that always ends with a cheer!!!!
Scotland Yard
I was bought Scotland Yard quite a few years ago and after a couple of months initial play it was consigned to the loft where it's remained for many a year until I rediscovered it a while back and have thoroughly enjoyed rediscovering it with my children, 11 & 9.
It's a great strategy game that can be as complicated or as simple as the players want it to be. One player is Mr X, who must travel across London using Taxis, Buses and the Underground escaping capture from the other players, who must work as team to track down and corner Mr X.
The pursuers have a limited number of travel tickets for the various forms of transport whiles Mr X has an unlimited supply and also the bonus of double tickets and black tickets. Mr X can also make journeys on the Thames which the pursuers cannot do.
There's some great education value to be found here as whether one is playing as Mr X or as a chaser, planning and strategy must be put to good use, and the team chasing Mr X must work as a team and discussion and collaboration are a must.
An added bonus is the lovely playing board, which is a simple but also very accurate map of the centre of London. Usually after a game we have at least another ½ hours fun as the children ask me about various areas of London and the tourist attractions that can be found in the different parts.
Good fun. Good team work. The bad gets to win sometimes
First of all being Ravensburger made you can be assured that this will be well made and well thought out. The board is a delight. As others have said one player is the burglar and the others work together to catch him.
The burglar is much of the time invisible. but between the detectives they need to work as a team to land on his square .
We have all enjoyed it .... and the game has a time limit of 24 rounds ie about 60-75 minutes.
I suspet that this is a game that will survive. Worth buying for children between the ages of 10-80!! Enjoy.
