Later, perhaps3
This is much admired, it has to be said. But, I don't like the pin-on utility of Karajan's way with the delicacies of Debussy repertoire, and this may be something of a bigotry on my part towards this recording. Get the 1941 Roger Desormiere recording, with Irene Joachim and Jacques Jensen, then maybe listen to the Karajan - but even then, I'd say, make sure you have first heard the versions recorded by Haitink, Abbado, Ansermet, and Boulez

Ravishingly Beautiful5
Karajan had a lifelong love affair with French music, as this recording shows. The orchestral playing is beautiful, the voices set on a ravishing tapestry of sound. Karajan sees the work as a drama, relating it to music dramas like Parsifal. This is not the only way with this music, but it demands to be heard. The soloists are very good, von Sade and van Dam outstanding.
