Editorial Reviews

Review
Tim Phillips is a thinking man's photographer. The central idea behind this work is so simple, yet so pregnant with feeling. There is something about a beautiful, naked girl prancing about in the murky labyrinth of the night that inspires a distinct sense of tension. Her glowing, naked body stands in stark contrast to the blackness surrounding her. Feelings of beauty and desire mix with those of fear and repulsion. And it's this incongruity that propels the entire work. It's fascinating. --Jack Gilbert, Editor: Michelle7.com

... the photographs are stunning. The theme of night really came across well and lent itself well to the erotic and sensual nature of the images. The photographer and his models are to be commended for such a fine portfolio ... First class! --Mark Marsay, Editor: JADE - The International Erotic Art & Literature Magazine

The book opens with a brief introduction and then we are taken straight into the 130 monochrome images, that inhabit the 128 pages of the monograph, with the majority of photographs being displayed one per page. Given that the images were made at night, and therefore exhibit a variety of dark tones, the book makes full use of a white border and aesthetically this allows each image to breathe on the page. Phillips' photographs are more than mere formal studies of light and shadow. As constructs there is far too much drama inherent within each image for them to have been the result of a simple exercise. These are not soft-focused and romanticised images of women the models often appear to wear the very dirt, oil and mud from their surroundings taking on this detritus as camouflage. Caught in the camera's 'headlights' their gaze challenges us for a brief moment, just long enough for the camera to record their defiance and then they make their escape scrambling through the undergrowth, negotiating a bridge or feeling their way through the constraints of a cellar and they are gone. The images within Distance Fades Between Us are well executed and remind one of a cross between Bill Brandt and Lee Friedlander, with a touch of Ralph Gibson thrown in, and the book's theme is strong enough to keep one's interest and draw one back for repeat viewings. --Christopher John Ball, Co-Founder: The Association of Erotic Artists

Manoeuvres in the Dark5
For many years, the female nude has been a favourite subject for artists. Painters, sculptors and more recently photographers have all taken up the challenge of trying to bring something new to this most classic yet timeless of themes.

"Distance Fades Between Us" is a series of black and white photographs of nude female models, usually appearing alone, but sometimes in pairs. The twist with this collection is that the photographs have been taken outside at night, adding a new dimension.

At their best, Tim Phillip's photographs contrast the form of the nude against the shapes in the darkness (tree stumps, monuments etc.) - sometimes this has an organic feel, with mud and leaves on the subject's body as well as on the ground. At other times the model is abstract, emotionless and cold, echoing the night in which she appears.

Even the most conventional images such as a young woman on the bonnet of a sports car are given fresh life by the unusual source of lighting or angle of shot.

This is an outstanding collection of interesting yet often sensual photographs, which should appeal to all fans of black & white photography who are seeking something a little off the beaten track.

Excellent!5
I've been a fan of Tim's photography for some time so it was great to see he was producing a book. It arrived this morning & first impressions are good. Beautiful models "enjoying" the countryside & cleverly lit in the dark of night.
It's great to see this type of photography book being published in the UK.
