classy strings and things
great though garagebands built in sounds are,i found the string section a little light in choice and at times,realism-i needed some realistic sounds and more variety.written a nice acoustic number and need a beautiful string section behind you? this is what you need-theres lots of single cellos, violins etc etc that sound just fab-havent tried the loops yet as i like to write my own where possible.this fitted the bill-the steinway piano makes a welcome addition to your library too.like all apple software-loading is a doddle-just follow the onscreen instructions and voila-your new orchestral sounds appear in the garageband library alongside the original preloaded stuff.like all things mac-not megacheap to buy-but quality-you do get what you pay for.
I was expecting something good but...
This is not the first expansion I've bought for GarageBand, I have the Remix Tools and some non-apple expansions, all have been worth the money but this has impressed me the most by far.
took a little longer to load up then I was expecting but the samples are high quality and need a lot of memory.
I use GarageBand for various types of music but I've always liked using orchestra sounds in dance music. With the basic stings/brass etc I found I needed to keep them very subtle in the mix to stop them sounding too synthetic but with Symphony Orchestra I've been able to come out of the closet a little more.
Having the choice of how strings are played as well as selecting string instruments, different brass instruments (that sound real) has completely opened up my options. Only recorded one tune since getting this (spent ages playing with different instruments) but I've already started telling friends who use GB to get this expansion.
I think a lot of people are ognorant as to how much GB can do and maybe put off by the limited samples on the basic package. Don't give up on it just yet.
Ace choirs
Whilst the loops are entertaining, the voice instruments are ace. I particularly like the way in the choir instruments the vowel sounds can be shifted, although the "eee" is not easy to set and in some pitches can sound plain nasty; someone will make a feature of this though! A great set.
