Some fascinating insight for film buffs
Lindsay Anderson directed some of Britain's most acclaimed fims (This Sporting Life, If... etc) and plays and was a complicated and intriguing person. This one-man presentation by Malcolm McDowell, who starred in Anderson's trilogy If..., O Lucky Man! and Britannia Hospital, shares his memories of the man in a way that is touching but never sentimental (Anderson would have hated sentimentality!) and insightful without ever forgetting to be entertaining.
Those familiar with Anderson's films will find this a remarkable set of reminiscences put across with great gusto (especially McDowell's mimicking the voices of the various actors involved), a fitting tribute to a real 'auteur' of British cinema. I once met and interviewed him myself for a student magazine in the early eighties, shortly after the undeserved critical mauling of Britannia Hospital - unappreciated in an era of yuppification - and again later at the National Film Theatre for a performance of If... (a seminal film for anyone who has ever dreamed of machine-gunning down his headmaster). This DVD brought those memories flooding back.
A worthwhile reminder that British filmmaking wasn't all James Bond, Hammer horror and the Carry On series.
