Amazon.co.uk Review
Crosby, Stills and Nash were already a "supergroup" before Neil Young, previously of Buffalo Springfield, joined them for this album. Indisputably one of the key albums of the immediate post-Woodstock era, Déjà vu does at times however sound a bit of a period piece. Ranging in emotion from the almost cutesy "Teach Your Children" and "Our House" to the moody, dark guitar sounds of "Almost Cut My Hair" and their version of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock", it is nevertheless an important document of the time. Young, who would go on to release the excellent After The Gold Rush later in the same year, provides the best moments with "Helpless" and the "Country Girl" medley. --Tim Perry
CD Description
Crosby, Still, and Nash topped their enormously popular self-titled 1969 debut by adding Neil Young to their ranks and expanding their stylistic and sonic range. The result, released in 1970, was an artistic and commercial success, representing the talents of the four primary players to excellent effect. More ambitious and incisive than its CSN predecessor,DEJA VU brings together folk, psychedelia, jazz, African, and Middle Eastern flavours, Tin Pan Alley, and hard rock in a manner that captures the tenor of the era's counterculturewithout sounding dated.
The group's distinctively lush harmonies are spread across the album, notably on the record's two centrepieces--"Carry On", which segues into a chugging, percussion-fueled groove halfway through, and "Woodstock",the band's hard rock re-working of the Joni Mitchell tune. Elsewhere, the songs are stamped by individual personalities, as on David Crosby's driving "Almost Cut My Hair", Graham Nash's quaint "Our House", and Stephen Stills dark, folky "4+20". Young's aching, plaintive "Helpless" is one of the highlights here, as is Crosby's complex title cut (with its intricate rhythms and vocal arrangements). Though their time together was tumultuous and short-lived, CSNY were one of the most successful acts of the era, and DEJA VU finds them at their peak.

Inspiring
The second album I bought as a youngster, the first being "After the Goldrush"For some reason this album always reminds me of Summer! There isn't a bad track here,'though Nash's "Our house " isn't one of my favourites.Stills songs are wonderful.a blistering "Carry on" and the lovely acoustic "4-20 ".The most mysterious song is Crosby's "Deja vu" with lovely harmonies, building towards the end of the song.Nash's "Teach your Children" is a nice song with Jerry Garcia on pedal steel.Crosby's "Almost cut my hair " sounds dated now, because the hippies back then have no hair today,or a very wide centre parting ! "Woodstock" written by Joni Mitchell is a good version with Stills and Young playing some serious lead guitar!
And Big Neil's two songs are fantastic,I never get tired listening to "Helpless " and the epic "Country girl!
Yes a fine album,go on press that "One click"
Ageless, timeless, breathtaking.
This album has been with me virtually all my life as my father bought it when it was released. When the cd version came out I secured my own copy and it was wonderful to hear the crispness of the tracks-"Country Girl", "Everybody I love you","Carry on" being particular stand outs.
If you love to hear sweet harmony then this is the album for you-still ageless, timeless and breathtaking.
Second Masterpiece Within Two Years!
Perhaps one of the greatest follow ups of all time, 'Deja Vu' showcases all of the superstar quartet and their immeasurable talent. For all the praise heaped on Neil Young, it was Stephen Stills who was the guiding force in this period, and establishes himself nicely with the powerful '4+20' and storming opener 'Carry On.'
Yet the other members contribute their own works of art: Crosby's 'Almost Cut My Hair' still haunts (written after Bobby Kennedy's asassination) as does the time changing 'Deja Vu'; Nash's efforts are written off as twee, but 'Teach Your Children' showed he could still produce the hits, and 'Our House' is a beautiful song describing life with Joni Mitchell; while Young offers the powerful 'Country Girl Medley' and the emotional 'Helpless.' All this, plus the classic version of Mitchell's 'Woodstock' & the almighty ending of 'Everybody I Love You' showed that CSNY were the band to beat in 1970. A masterpiece.
