Customer Reviews
Gruff, grim and glorious
This is a beautifully produced album in which Kris sings of his mortality and the immortality of the rebellious spirit. The songs are sometimes growled, sometimes whispered, simultaneously tender and defiant. We ought to be grateful that he's still hanging around making stuff worth listening to.
surprised to love it
I bought this album having read a newspaper review and it really lives up to the five stars it had been awarded. I love Johnny Cash's late work and this has the same quality of honesty, a life lived and songs coming from the heart. I was not really a fan of his and thought his music a bit middle-of-the-road for my taste but
this one has real guts. Maybe this is the first one he's made entirely for himself - I recommend it!
mortality
The fundamental thing which distinguishes Kris Kristoffen from other country/ballad singers is the personal experience which colours every song he has written. In his early days, the roistering cynical lover is clearly and cleverly displayed. His love of the bar-room and the ladies, and their consequences are woven into his poetic verses - for that is what they are (He was a Rhodes scholar with Bill Clinton). His peak was I believe reflected in the Essential discs, with wife Rita Coolidge providing sublime backing.
This CD is not the one to buy if you have not heard his earlier power and skill. This is the logical and emotional requiem to that work, with age and experience built into the saddest and yet sweet conclusion to a life full of vitality and poetry. To all who have followed his music, this is an essential disc.
