Handy and up to date - a good place to start - speak to the locals!4
We were lucky enough to be able to travel to NYC from the UK and only wi th a few weeks notice. With this in mind I quickly purchased the most up to date copy a guide I could find and started reading. I reckon it's best to take a good luck at the maps (detatchable ones in back) and orientate yourself with the main sights and places to go. Then scan the book and list what you would like to see and then plan your days accordingly and go visit these places. There is lots of info for any place you can think of so just read up before you go. Good value, also speak to as many New Yorkers as you can and ask them what to see and where to go, they're very friendly and helpful. Enjoy NYC!

Best guide book on the market4
Forget the 'Rough Guides', Lonely Planet is brilliant! I took this to NYC and found it invaluable. The maps are really easy to use and I love the little narratives at the front. I've gone back to this book loads of times since getting back, and have found new places that I wish I'd have gone to. I'm planning on going back in September, and this time we're going to Philadelphia (only a 2 hour bus trip from NYC), there's great information about excursions in the back of this book too if you're there for long enough. Enjoy NYC, just don't forget your comfy shoes!!!

pretty good guidebook4
found it much more useful then the time out NYC guidebook. Went to a couple of suggested bars which were fun. the pull out map is particularly useful.
However, NYC is a city you want to get lost in so don't get the guidebook out too often!
