A very disappointing, misleading book
I read the book out of curiosity and found it infuriating. It does not tell lies but half truths. There are many mistakes, it refers to Spain, when Spain did not exist as a country until the 16th Ct. Before the Moorish invasion Portugal was part of same Visigothic kingdom. Several kingdoms appeared after the Reconquista including Castile (always referred as Spain) Portugal, Navarre and Aragon. The history related is that of Castile and Castilian culture completely ignoring Aragon. There are comments that I don't know where do they come from, it mentions that the done thing for young Spanish girls is no to study but to go to secretarial school so they can go to work and help their large families. Even though this was written in 1985 Spain had already one of the lowest birth rates in Europe. Being one of those young girls myself in the late 70s, it was expected of me and my sister, cousins and friends to go to university, which we all did. Certainly I don't recognize the portrait and interpretation of modern Spain made on this book. In my opinion it should be taken out of circulation as it does not help with the understanding and the interpretation of Modern Spain, in my opinion shows a total lack of real knowledge.
