DVD Description
The Ballet Theatre Espanol presents Rafael Aguilar’s unique dance theatre production, Carmen Flamenco. Based on the story and music of Bizet’s masterpiece, Carmen, Spanish choreographer Rafael Aguilar has created a fascinating, erotic dance drama that fuses the expressionism of modern ballet with traditional Spanish dance. The audience itself is drawn into a maelstrom of emotions: a hot mixture of flamenco and bolero, with subliminal dance scenes and sensual choreography. Using these elements in Carmen Flamenco, Aguilar has created a timeless piece of dance drama that sets him apart from other Spanish choreographers of classical, pure flamenco.
This production, originally performed in Tokyo in 1982, was celebrated enthusiastically by press and audiences alike, in Japan and all over Europe. The production was filmed at the Staatsoper, Hamburg in 1992

Customer Reviews
Outstanding Mix of Flamenco. Modern Dance and Ballet.
This is an incredible piece of theatre and dance, highly emotive, very sexual and beautifully danced and performed by the whole cast. The choreography of Rafael Agulitar is out of this world and a wonderful example of his work. The combination of Bizet's opera score and superb traditional style flamenco music and singing is only bettered by the outstanding dancing, a colourful mix of flamenco, modern dance and ballet.
Highly Recommended.
