Synopsis
MONSTER HOUSE focuses on an anthropomorphic mansion, a haunted house with human characteristics that actively frightens neighbourhood folks as it attempts to reign over its inhabitants. One day, a trio of intrepid youngsters, sick of being terrorised, decide to fight back. They are cutely pubescent DJ (Mitchel Musso); his fumbling, chubby friend Chowder (Sam Lerner); and smart-as-a-whip tomboy Jenny (Spencer Locke), who immediately enchants the awkward boys. The local police are no help, so DJ, Chowder, and Jenny are left to their own clever devices, which result in a series of rollicking, hilarious, and sometimes scary adventures. A cast of colourful personalities surrounds the central characters, and they are voiced by luminaries who include Catherine O'Hara, Kevin James, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kathleen Turner, Steve Buscemi, and the brilliant Fred Willard. And teen hipsters will delight in hearing the droll voice of Jon Heder (the title character of cult hit NAPOLEON DYNAMITE) as a deadbeat pizza maker nicknamed Skull. First-time director Gil Kenan proves spirited and highly adept at mastering such a high-tech production, and followers of animation will want to pay attention to the use of new digital techniques that stray away from straightforward computer drawing. MONSTER HOUSE is executive produced by Robert Zemeckis, who helmed the innovative and sophisticated animated feature WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT? in 1988. He once again proves that family fare need not be alienating to older viewers, but can appeal to on every level from childhood and upward. MONSTER HOUSE is a feat of blockbusting filmmaking--a visually stunning, witty tale that is sure to stimulate children and their parents.

Customer Reviews

Well good anaimation5
Monster house is right at the top with my favoroute animation movies.
Monster House is a really good movie, with a good cast, good jokes, and even a phew good scares. For a childrens movie, this can get spooky at some points, and little children might get scared, but during the credits, that should cheer the children up again. I f you have any questions from the movie, they are definitly all answered. When I first saw the movie, I was wondering how the house even became the way it is, and it may be nearer to the end, but this question is answered.
The acting, or voices as I should say, are made as realistic as they would be even if this were not animation.
Ithink that this film was very good, and some of you may not agree with the next part, but I even thought it was better than The Simpsons Movie, and I will admit the simpsons movie was a lot more funnier than this, way more funnier, but this film and a phew laughs, a phew scres, and just had a lot better storyline to it, and this film was something you don't see everyday. Those of you have seen things like simpsons movie, if you liked that, then you will love this, and maybe even if you hated simpsons, you will still like this, because Monster House is one great animation, and if you have not seen Monster House, I really recommend you do, but watch it with other people, and if you're young with your family, because when I saw this, I found it was a lot more fun watching it with people than it was on my own the second time.

Poor quality picture3
I haven't many Blu-ray discs to compare this too, but I certainly hope this is not the zenith of high definition. The picture is really not that great. It is supposed to be 1080p, but in some places it seems not to be very sharp and in other scenes, there seems to be some bad encoding that causes artifacts on the screen. I even switched my Blu-ray player from 1080p to 480p, just to see what the quality difference was. The answer is: not a lot.

Besides the ropy picture quality, the film passes the time, but is more than a little predicatble. The characters are forgettable and they forgot to tie up the loose ends properly for the final denouement, so they crammed some extra explanatory scenes into the credits, which is extremely lazy.

This is a rental rather than a purchase... and you might as well rent the DVD, given the miniscule improvements in the Blu-ray version.

Spooky fun a Halloween story3
Well told story with suspense pathos ignorant cops, unaware parents, bottles of pee, and a house with an appetite. Neighbors form bonds as they try to fathom the secrets of what motivates a house to consume kites and cars.

Then there is the great dialog "That must be its uvula." "Oh it is a girl house."

The film is animated which allows for many scenarios that are not physiologically possible. This actually adds to the spookiness. There is a socially relevant story with a positive ending.

However the there is nothing unique about the story or the characters. This makes it attractive for people that like formula films.
