Amazon.co.uk Review
Masterful Hong Kong action director John Woo (The Killer, Face/Off) turns in this exciting and pyrotechnic tale of warring gangsters and shifting loyalties. Chow Yun-Fat (The Replacement Killers) plays a take-no-prisoners cop on the trail of the Triad, the Hong Kong Mafia, when his partner is killed during a gun battle. His guilt propels him into an all-out war against the gang, including an up-and-coming soldier in the mob (Tony Leung) who turns out to be an undercover cop. The two men must come to terms with their allegiance to the force and their loyalty to each other as they try to take down the gangsters. A stunning feast of hyperbolic action sequences (including a climactic sequence in an entire hospital taken hostage), Hard Boiled is a rare treat for fans of the action genre, with sequences as thrilling and intense as any ever committed to film. --Robert Lane

Synopsis
When a tough police officer's (Chow Yun-Fat) partner is brutally murdered, he joins forces with another loose-cannon cop (Tony Leung) to exact his own bloody revenge on the gun-smuggling gangsters responsible for his friend's death. A lot of action, guns, and violence, all masterfully rendered by action maestro John Woo (THE KILLER, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2). This is the last film the director made in his native Hong Kong before emigrating to the United States.

Brilliant - a must for action fans!5
Along with 'The Killer' and 'A Better Tomorrow', this is the best collection of Chow Yun Fat/John Woo action films. Remember though, WATCH WITH SUBTITLES ONLY, DO NOT WATCH WITH DUBBED VOICEOVERS! And that goes for any foreign film!

it makes you want to cry1
i'm now in my 3rd year of DVD ownership, and yet i am still amazed at how great films can be mauled by distribution companies when released onto this superb format. a few years ago metro-tartan were to be lauded for releasing hard boiled as pan-and-scan dubbed AND widescreen subtitled on VHS. a choice that we could make as to which format suited our style of viewing. fast forward to the digital age....it looks like they picked this print from the bin, my 5 year old vhs transfer is cleaner! where's the use of the flexibilty that DVD allows? cant both versions of this film occupy the same disc? i love the cinema of vengence genre,i love this film, i love most john woo/chow yun fat films, but this version is an absolute disgrace and travesty... NOT BUY THIS DVD...BUY THE VHS VERSION
