Average customer review:Product Description
Farthing Wood is being bulldozed and a drought means the animals no longer have anywhere to live or drink. Fox, Badger, Toad, Tawny Owl, Mole and the other animals band together and leave their ancestral home and set off to move to a far-away nature reserve. Their journey is full of adventure and fraught with disasters: a fire, a storm, a treacherous river crossing and a hunt. The animals must unite in adversity and in doing so they learn about each other's habits and limitations. This is a story about tolerance, cooperation, survival and friendship. Both heart-wrenching and heart-warming, this classic story continues to appeal and capture children's imaginations.

From the Back Cover
After their legendary journey out of danger and into the safe haven of White Deer Park, the animals of Farthing Wood look forward to getting used to their new life in the nature reserve.
But winter is drawing in: the nights are colder and food for the animals is scarce. Other animals in the park are unfriendly and want to make trouble, and around the Park there are the perils of hunters' traps, as well as humans and their machines. Will life ever return to normal for the animals of Farthing Wood...?
About the Author
Colin Dann was born in Richmond, London, in 1943. After leaving school he worked first for a large textile company before his real love - the world of books - brought him a job in publishing. He worked for William Collins, Sons & Co. for thirteen years. During this time, Colin wrote his first book, The Animals of Farthing Wood, which was published in 1979. It was an immediate success, winning awards and it has now been translated into sixteen languages. Six sequels and one prequel followed and enjoyed similar success. In 1992 a major animation series based on the Farthing Wood stories was broadcast by the BBC and it stole the hearts of children throughout Britain and Europe. Colin lives with his wife in a converted Oast house on the Kent/Sussex border.

Brilliant Book
Who are the main characters? Who is your favourite character and why?
Fox, Vixen, Mole, Badger, Adder, Tawny Owl, pheasant and his mate, Kestrel, the field mice, the voles, the squirrels, Toad, the hare and the rabbits are the main characters. My favourite character is toad because he is the guide showing all the animals which way to go.
What is the basic plot of the book and how does it develop?
The plot of the story is that humans are destroying Farthing Wood and toad finds out about White Deer Park - a nature reserve. Badger and fox call an assembly and all of the animals swear an oath. The have many obstacles on their way to their destination.
How would you describe the atmosphere of the book?
It is rather a bumpy atmosphere because it is problem-filled yet there is sorrow and joy.
What was the most exciting moment in the book?
I think it is exciting when they are trapped in a shed and they are not sure how to get out.
Did this book change the way you thought or felt about anything?
It changed the way I feel about irresponsible humans and how much a few humans do for animals.
Who do you think would like this book?
Anyone aged from about 6 - 100. (And further).
A great novel
I as a child, have read the entire collection of "the animals of farthing wood" and found that the first one was very exciting. All the characters are young and full of energy, but as more stories carry on, they have many generations of babies. This is a great adventure about Man destroying animals homes and "Toad"
leading the pack into"white deer park". Many exciting, and sad things happen in the story, and it definitly is one of my top 10 books,
All round the story you'll find something you'll enjoy, so go on read it...
This book is brilliant - for kids and adults alike
This novel and its sequels gripped me from the off. It is very well written. It tells the familiar story of animals being uprooted by an encroaching housing development and their journey to find their new home, a nature reserve. The animals are individuals, and their nature and demeanour are brought to the reader's attention in an excellent manner.
