Customer Reviews
Don't forget to read the pictures!
An absolutely delightful book, one which is, I suspect emjoyed as much by adults as by children. There is a message here for all tired disciples - 'Take a day off. The world won't fall apart without you.' As usual Nicholas Allan's pictures are clear and simple but add so much to the story, for example, look at Judas Iscariot. All of the other disciples have brightly coloured robes; Judas has a plain white one. The other disciples wave goodbye to Jesus as he sets off on his day's holiday; Judas turns his back and, not to give too much away, look at him at the supper table or at the end of the story when everyone else is fast asleep.
Many years ago, I used to read 'Rosie's Walk' to the children in my Nursery Assessment Class not only because it was a simple story but also to see which ones noticed the 'parallel story' in the pictures. Jesus' Day Off is another excellent book which has far more going on in the pictures than in the written storyline. Enough of this - I'm being far too intellectual - enjoy this book because it is fun!
An excellent antidote to the busy-ness of our times.
Jesus is depicted as being overly busy working hard performing miracles, telling marvellous stories, etc. One day he wakes up exhausted. He has a day off. He feels he's wasted his time. But God shows him that by being himself and not trying too hard he has brought life to others. Like all great children's books, adults too find it entertaining. I used it to illustrate a sermon and it hit a chord with the congregation - several wanted either to borrow or buy it. I've given several to workaholic minister colleagues!
I love it!
This book is a MUST for anyone who works too hard. This is a captivating book with delightful illustrations and packs a powerful punch in it's basic message - when you take care of yourself you are much better equipped to take care of others. I have bought it for countless numbers of my workaholic clergy colleagues and it has been a hit every time.
