Norton bye bye
I've been a great fan of Norton from the early (pre-virus) days when I often used the near-magical powers of his utilities to bring disks and PCs back to life. Therefore, it was a no-brainer to buy Norton Anti-Virus, which was okay for a while, but the latest versions have a habit of slowing some machines to grinding halt. Then I discovered spyware or rather it discovered me, so I downloaded the Microsoft Antispyware beta as well. Then I had to use the anti-spam feature in Outlook 2003 and the Windows Firewall. All work in some kind of harmony, but I figured that an all-in-one solution would be better.
And so...I bought ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite v6 largely as a result of it being PC Pro's A Listed product. I haven't been disappointed so far. For £41, it's cheaper than the equivalent Norton products and works fairly seamlessly. It's found evidence of 19 spies not picked up by my previous protection and (unlike Windows Firewall) allows me to upload my Web Site through FTP without having to turn the firewall off. It is producing a lot of alerts at the moment as various bits of software like Realplayer try to bury themselves in my registry, but it does seem to learn and the help screens are good. It's one of those programs that you can either install and forget or play with the settings to your heart's content if you're so disposed.
Just one word of warning, a search of the net suggests that it doesn't like co-existing with other progs so would recommend uninstalling your existing anti-virus and antispyware before installing this. Obvious really, but it may account for some of the problems that others have had. There is also a new update on the web site so after installing, it will ask you if you want to install the new version - it's a 21MB download but it claims to cure many of the minor compatibility bugs in the first V6 released.
All in all, I'd recommend it to anyone - sorry Norton!
ZoneAlarm Interner security Suite 2006
Having had major problems with norton antivirus, which 5 months into use wouldnt update from thier website. I decided to buy Zone alarms 2006 suite having previously installed thier free version which worked fine.
Having deleted all other antivirus software from my sysyem including the free version, Zone Alarm loaded up no problem.
However I then down loaded the update version from thier website which caused the true vector monitor to malfunction. So deleted everything and started again but when prompted to update the version from thier website. I declined. The original version supplied on the CD bought from Amazon works excellently. I get regular update to antivirus and antispyware. So far no virus problems, the antispyware has found and automatically deleted spyware which has come in. I have no problem logging onto any websites. Parental control prevents access to unsavouray sites. It takes a little while to fully understand the alert messages, but by clicking on the more info link, a full explanation is provided from the Zone alarm website with advice on what to do. I would recommend this product for anyone who has basic knowledge of thier PC and its programmes functions. As most of the alerts relate to activities installed programmes are trying to perform, ie if a prgramme does something unusual because its potentialy infected.. Zone Alarms will alert you so you can prevent any damage and then you can perform a system scan with antivirus. However so far nothing seems to have got passed the firewall. There also appears to be no slow down of my computer which has been reported with other internet security from other manufacturers. A very good internet security programme and a bargain at its current Amazon price.
Really very good
I have moved from Macafee (slow) to Norton (which I liked) to paying for Zone Alarm. The free Zone Alarm firewall was so powerful and easy to use I tried this.
It is very good. It's Privacy settings caught an app sending my personal details to the interent- Norton missed this.
One problem - I use internet sharing on a LAN with ICS on XP. My networked PC wouldn't connect to the internet when I installed Zone Alarm. It turns out that I needed to grant "Generic Host
Process for Win32 Services" access to the internet. Zone Alarm was playing safe. Got that info from their email helpline. All is just fine. By the way, granting application access to the internet or denying access is very easy to do - nice and visual.
I'd recommend this product.
