Review
Wright's characterful work supplies inspiration throughout the book, and in following his instruction, readers should be able to tune in to their own imagination and develop a means to express it. --Leisure Painter

Overcome the fear5
When I first opened this book I thought I was going to find the usual lessons on perspective or showing a finished drawing and then describing the steps it would take to achieve something similar. But this book is as the title suggests, "The magic of drawing". It teaches you how it's possible to become the artist you've always dreamed of becoming instead of someone who will make up any excuse not to put down that first pencil mark because the results are bound to be both embarrassing and childish.

When you read the introduction you're told to follow the lessons step by step and not skip them. I have only read the first two and find that I want to savour each one. No idea whether I'll be a great artist at the end of them but at least I feel like I want to give it a go, and so the magic must be working.

Not much magic1
This book contains nothing magical about drawing. It is mostly based on the author's obvious obsession for Harry Potter and other mythical figures. It harps on the usual theme found in most other art instruction books, in which you are advised to practice drawing objects and figures while being more observant about what is in front of you.
I have read numerous drawing books and came to the same conclusion after each one: the only way to learn to draw is to practice every day using pen. There is no magical secret about drawing; it comes down to practice and training your mind to see what you are viewing rather than what your brain thinks you are viewing. This book was a waste of money.
