Average customer review:Product Description
At a time when artists were still primarily occupied with religious or mythological subject matter, the great Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel (c. 1525-1569) turned his eye on the everyday. Most of Bruegel's 45 surviving works, which are all reproduced in this book, record the facts of 16th century life in rural or small town communities. In this title in the Basic Art Series, Rose-Marie and Rainer Hagen outline the artist's account of his society and times, and the relevance that account has for us today.

A good guide - on a budget
Be warned: this book is printed at quite a small format (smaller than A4), and the majority of the illustrations are again half the size of that, or even smaller. The main virtue of this publication is its completeness, and as a guide to every painting produced by Pieter Bruegel the Elder this is an excellent addition to a library of art books. The text also provides a useful and pretty thorough introduction to Bruegel's art. If you really want to see these paintings in their splendour, however, you will need to invest in something that reproduces them at a rather bigger size.
