A timeless album from a timeless songstress
There is no doubt that for some people Kiki Dee will be best remembered for her duets with Elton John (Don't Go Breaking My Heart'&' True Love')and recording the original of the much covered 'I've Got The Music In Me' in the early '70s. However, this album, along with the release of her entire back catalogue on cd for the very first time, shows that there is so much more to this girl from Bradford.
This set from 1974, along with the later self titled 'Kiki Dee' album, are among the strongest showcasing Kiki at her very best. Although she can rock out on tracks such as the singles 'Hard Luck Story' and 'How Glad I am', she really excels when tackling ballads of which there are several gems included here - not least the self penned 'Someone To Me','Little Frozen One' and 'Simple Melody'.
If you are a fan of singer songwriters such as Joni Mitchell or even Sarah McLachlan, then you will love these recordings which sound as fresh and contemporary today as they did some thirty years ago.
This nicely packaged set of re-issues from EMI with bonus tracks, extensive linear notes and original artwork is long overdue and well worth the money. At less than a tenner I predict that after listening to this album you will be dipping into your pocket to add the others to your collection.
HOLD ON TO YOUR HAT HONEY, SING, SING, SING, SING!
Love it. At last, after far too long a wait, this excellent album is available again. Backed by a great band, Kiki puts on her best album appearance. Through a set of tracks of varying tempos Kiki is the main star, but her fellow musicians run her close, Jo Partridge on guitar in particular. However, the other hero of the album is keyboard player Bias Boshell (ex-Trees before going onto playing for BJH and the Moody Blues) who contributes the writing on 5 out the 9 original tracks. Producer Gus Dudgeon also stamps on his usual hallmark of top quality arrangements.
The four extra tracks of 3 b-sides and the excellent nearly hit (no 33) How Glad I Am are also worthy of being 'bonus' tracks rather than filler.
Once you've got past the excellent title track, you'll find this album just gets better and better. Thirty four years on and I still play this one. Feel funky, feel good! Sit back and re-live a top slice of 1974.
KIKI DEE BAND - the ultimate Kiki
After many years of searching to replace my old Rocket Records vinyl album, "I've Got The Music In Me" featuring the KIKI DEE BAND, it's great to find a CD version available at last.
Kiki was always a versatile singer, but the Kiki Dee Band established an identity for her. She had a sound created by Jo Partridge and the other members of her band, but above all, she had the Holy Grail necessary for all bands, a superior songwriter in Bias Boshell.
Kiki's superb voice never lets her down. The stand-out tracks for me are "You Need Help" and "Step By Step" as well as the title track.
Forget all the Pop Princess stuff from Fontana, the lightweight duets with Elton and the excursion to Motown, this album was the ultimate Kiki.
This album proved that the Kiki Dee Band was capable of being an arena-filling band.
Why oh why Kiki did you not continue !
