Product Description

"The Last Watch" is the stunning sequel to the Night Watch trilogy, following the fortunes of the Others. Indistinguishable from normal people but possessed of supernatural powers and capable of entering the Twilight, a shadowy world that exists in parallel to our own, each Other owes allegiance either to the Dark, or to the Light...While on holiday in Scotland, visiting 'The Dungeons of Edinburgh', a young Russian tourist is murdered. As the police grapple with the fact that the cause of the young man's death was a massive loss of blood, the Watches are immediately aware that there is a renegade vampire on the loose. Anton - the hero of the Night Watch trilogy - is detailed to this seemingly mundane investigation, but begins to realise that there is much more to the story than a wildcat vampire and a single murder, and discovers that a team of unlicensed Others are hunting for a fabled magical treasure, hidden in the sixth level of the Twilight by Merlin himself.

From the Inside Flap
The Last Watch, stunning sequel to the Night Watch Series, once again follows the fortunes of the Others. Indistinguishable from normal people but possessed of supernatural powers and capable of entering the Twilight, a shadowy world that exists in parallel to our own, each Other owes allegiance either to the Dark, or the Light...

While on holiday in Scotland, visiting a macabre tourist attraction, ‘The Dungeons of Edinburgh’, a young Russian tourist is murdered. As the police grapple with the fact that the cause of the young man’s death was a massive loss of blood, the Watches are immediately aware that there is a renegade vampire on the loose. Anton – the hero of The Night Watch trilogy - is detailed to this seemingly mundane investigation, but on arriving in Scotland begins to realise that there is much more to the story than a wildcat vampire and a single murder.

Aided by Thomas, the head of Edinburgh’s Night Watch, Anton investigates and ruminates, and becomes aware that a team of unlicensed Others are hunting for a fabled magical treasure, hidden in the sixth level of the Twilight by Merlin himself…

From the Back Cover
Praise for the Night Watch Trilogy

‘So good that the film feels like a trailer for it’ Time Out

‘JK Rowling, Russian style... A cracking read, owing more to Rowling or Philip Pullman than it does to the horror genre... Surprisingly readable and addictive... It relies on suspense and psychological drama and a good dose of humour - rather than blood and guts.’ Daily Telegraph

‘When a particular kind of story, heavily based in one culture, gets transferred into a culture distinctly different, something magical happens. Something modern, new and distinctly creepy... The magic is rooted in the realities of modern Russia. Inventive, sardonic, and imbued with a surprising the sense that, for this author and his audience, much of this stuff is new-minted.’ Independent

‘Fascinating… One of the most original and readable supernatural fictions in some time.’ Scotland on Sunday

About the Author

watch out3
As an avid fan of the "watch" trilogy, I had preordered this book as soon as I was able, and it arrived yesterday. It is as good as the other three except for one tiny problem: There is a chapter missing from the book!

My advice would be to hold off on buying this book until the publishers have noticed their (or their printers') mistake and have rectified it, as the missing chapter seems quite important to the story development!

Updated on 2nd Jan 2009:
Finally got back another copy of the book from the publishers and, thankfully, it contained the missing chapter.
The missing chapter discusses the Anton and Edgar piece among other things (a whole 18 pages! worth)
It was well worth emailing the publishers with the problem as I got the new copy free, as well as a coupon for a large discount off other titles AND free P&P.

Now that I have read the book in full, I would change my star rating to 5, but amazon won't seem to let me :O)

A lovely addition to the series4
I adored the trilogy and I waited eagerly for the fourth installment. Luckily I didn't have the missing chapter problem. The story feels more action-filled the than the previous ones, but balanced it with a hefty plot that managed to tie up some loose ends. As an extra bonus it was set in the city I live in. My one small quibble is that a lot happens in the last five or so pages, and with this as the end, I'd have liked something of an epilogue to see how the characters I've come to love go on. Apart from the abrupt finish I have no complaints, and would recommend the entire series to anyone. I'd like to have a word with whoever keeps filing it under horror in Waterstones, mind.

Wait on this one...3
Another excellent watch book. But wait until it has been reprinted as it is missing chapter 5 of the second part of the book and this chapter would seem to be a very important one!!!
