Amazon.co.uk Review
This CD is an outlet for the loose coalition of remixers, DJs, and studioheads known as the Asian Underground (because of their Asian or Anglo-Asian backgrounds). They all put a distinctly Indian spin on this music, with the dhol drum at the heart of the beat, and all the technology on top. Singh's two tracks are things of joy, but nothing here disappoints, whether the modern film music of A.R. Rahman or the drum'n'bass of State of Bengal. --Chris Nickson EMD
CD Description
This album is a cross-section of some of the dance/drum-and-bass/electronica/beats/ambient sounds coming from young India and those in other countries of Indian decent. The artists featured here mix electronically oriented sounds and samples of traditional Indian music to create a heady sonic stew that is mesmerising (even if you're not a dance-dance-dancin' machine).
The contribution by State of Bengal, "Chittagong Chill", conjures visions of early 1970s Miles Davis playing with some Indian flutists doing the soundtrack to a filmnoir spaghetti western movie, with the whole thing mixed byMoby or Goldie. Lelonek's "Kizmet" is a punchy, dizzying drum 'n' bass workout, with driving, precise, relentless beatsand sitar and vocal samples. This is a fine sampler for adventurous dance music fans, as well as those who want to get a handle on what's on-the-edge in electronica.

A superb summary of asian-influenced dance music!
What a great collection! I defy anyone with a passion for dance music not to have shivers run down their spine during the first track, Jaan. TUNE! I didn't think this track would be bettered but I was wrong. If ever there was a piece of music worth the full ten pound note it is track six; Mumbai Theme Tune by A R Rahman. Where Jaan touched the soul, this tune tugs the heart strings. All those who have heard the tune know what I mean. A breathtaking orchestral piece that has but one fault; it's over far too soon. If I got this CD stuck in my stereo I wouldn't be too upset!
East meets West at its best
Well where shall I start from ..... the opening track is wicked, the one after that is wicked, then the one after that .... you get the jist by now. I like to buy variety of music so that I don't get stuck into one sort and like to smaple everything, you have indie, drum n bass, garage, rap, hip hop, R&B, chill out, dance, house etc. I have been looking for underground asian music for ages, especially the sounds of the Tabla and Sitar combined and it doesn't get any better then this. You got your tabla, sitar and I must say singers whose voice will just knock you out. Most of the tracks start off with the sitar and then the drum n bass blends in, not too heavy, then the tabla kicks in and then you realise .... DAMN I just bought a good CD. You will be sitting somewhere whether it be work or play or on the bus and you will still have the music in your head, you will be sitting there and you can still hear the sitar and tabla playing in your head.
You know after a night out the next day sometimes you just do not want to listen to music, your head hurts etc, well this is different. The most perfect CD to just kick back and relax. You can just sit there and close your eyes and let the prolific, benign and soothing sound just take you away to some next level.
I like to listen to asian music but what is out there does my nut in e.g. Bollywood style this on the other hand is exceptional. This you can brag about. This is for those people who like the original instruments in asian/indian music sound, with drum n bass! In other words for the new generation who like to look cool. This is going to kick start your image in a new direction.
drum n bass in your face with the asianz
I bought this cd not knowing what to expect from this selection which talvin has presented to us. The opening track was WOW! I had been tryin to get this track for ages ( it featured in the Philips CDRW tv add and it was phat!!) the first few tracks are drum n bass but not hard style. The next few tracks are a selection of more diverse east meets west , and the last few tracks end with a asian/west/funky drum n bass feel. The album is a great buy , and represents the growing talent of asian producers. For those of you who are not sure just listen to Jaan and im sure youll buy the album :o)
