Synopsis
A BIT OF A DO charts the comedic progress of two feuding families (the Simcocks and the Rodenhursts) as they are thrust together at a changing series of social events. Mr Simcock is in metalwork (toasting forks, coal scuttles, door knockers) while Mr Rodenhurst is a very respectable up-market dentist. A BIT OF A DO is a hilarious TV series written by David Nobbs (THE RISE AND FALL OF REGINALD PERRIN) witnessing the snobbery and petty jealousies between people thrown together in those fateful occasions. Stars comedy legends David Jason and Gwen Taylor and features a young David Thewlis.

Superbly brilliant nonsense
This is another "Love it or hate it", I suspect, although how anyone could not love this is beyond me. Brilliantly written by David Nobbs, it has all the hallmarks of genius of his now iconic "Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin", with an even greater list of outstanding performances. Many of these performances came from stellar names such as David Jason, Gwen Taylor, Nicola Pagett, Stephanie Cole, David Thewlis and Michael Jayston, but at times these excellent actors had the show stolen from them by others in the cast, most frequently by Eric (not, as IMDB have it, "Alec") the "Tickety-boo" barman, played sublimely by Malcolm Hebden, later of Corrie fame. Don't expect to be howling with laughter, but do expect to be roundly amused and entertained by clever wit and plot, expertly delivered.
A delight!
This wonderful and subtle comedy series is great entertainment. Special mention must be made of Nicola Pagett's delightful portrayal of a middle-class lady who starts an affair with a working-class neighbour (David Jason), but we also meet a number of other characters who react to the affair in various ways. The episodes consist of a series of local functions, often held in a pub or hotel, when all the characters meet up (sometimes inadvertently!) and the story line develops as the series progresses. Just as enjoyable today as when it first appeared on our TV screens.
