DVD Description
The A Touch of Frost - Series 6 four-disc box set contains the entire sixth season of this award-winning cops and crime drama. David Jason stars in the lead role of Detective Inspector Jack Frost, and he is joined by Bruce Alexander, who plays the incredibly officious Superintendent Norman Mullet. The show is set in a fictitious town called Denton and, while each episode contains at least two plots related to violence and/or murder, there is not a lot of graphic violence. Episodes in this series include: "Appendix Man"; "One Man's Meat"; "Private Lives"; and "Keys to the Car".
Synopsis
A widowed, cranky work-addict, Frost is constantly under pressure to meet targets and keep bosses in the division off his back--particularly Superintendent Norman Mullett, who is fastidious when it comes to doing things 'by-the-book'. Mullet (nicknamed "Horn-rimmed Harry" by Frost) is obsessed with following rigid policies, while Frost prefers to let himself be guided by his innate copper instinct. Mullet abhors the regular habit Frost has of breaking the rules--like when he searches suspects' homes without a warrant--and becoming emotionally involved in cases. But there isn't a whole lot he can do about it, seeing as Frost earned the respect of the Chief Constable when he received the George Cross for Bravery. The constant run-ins between the two definitely provide for some comic moments in this award-winning series.

Poor DVD release of a Brilliant Program
Firstly, I have to say I'm a massive fan of Frost and have been very pleased with the DVD releases of series 1 to 5, courtesy of Universal - Playback. So, imagine my surprise, when I found that series 6 onwards (now released by ITV Granada Ventures) are all in the wrong ratio. Unlike many modern TV shows, Frost has continued to filmed full frame (not Widescreen) and as such, needs a full frame 4:3 (1.33 to 1) DVD release. Instead, about 25% of the picture has been been cut away completely (about 12.5% from both the top and bottom) in order to fit it in to a Widescreen 16:9 (1.78 to 1) frame. This not only makes many of the scenes look awfully, but in the worst cases, IE. One Man's Meat, there are close ups of DCI Frost talking where his mouth is completely off the bottom of the screen. This is not acceptable.
My advice, if you have a multi-region DVD player, buy the American DVD release instead. If not, look for either the French (Inspecteur Frost) or Dutch DVD releases, as I have been led to believe these are all in the correct 4:3 full frame ratio.
Great but this is start of the sound effects people
Another great series - I do not think there is a bad one of 'Frost'. However, although the sound effects are almost kept under control in this set, it was the beginning of the unnecessary and almost infantile sounds behind certain scenes in this series. They really jar and interfere with the programme. It seems as if contemporary producers feel a compulsion to put in these sounds - it is almost as if they have a quota they must put in. I do wish the would not. It makes the scenes very corny. Hence the four and not five stars.
GREAT
I,ve written other reviews of the Touch of Frost series,David Jason delivers a fantastic presentation as this rather different detecive solves his well written crimes..Allways a good buy and something I,m sure I,ll never tire of seeing
