Customer Reviews
A gem- repression, pomposity and the need to belong
Naipaul's satirization of middle-class, middle-aged life during the middle of the twentiath century is hilarious, touching and despite its subject very interesting.
Mr Stone is a comic and a tragic figure- his plans of "The Knights Compainion" a solidarity scheme for workers and ex-workers at the company he works for is both hilarious as it is the type of thing it is only too easy to imagine a company doing and sad in that it shows Mr Stone's deep fear of not belonging and a fear of becoming old.
A very good little book that presses all the right buttons.
