Product Description

The story grew out of a map that led to imaginary treasure, devised during a holiday in Scotland by Stevenson and his nephew. The tale is told by an adventurous boy, Jim Hawkins, who gets hold of treasure map and sets off with an adult crew in search of the buried treasure. Among the crew, however, is the treacherous Long John Silver who is determined to keep the treasure for himself. Stevenson's first full-length work of fiction brought him immediate fame and continues to captivate readers of all ages.

Editorial Reviews

Review
Classic Comics return in this uninspired adaptation of Stevenson's rollicking pirate tale. The storyline is faithful-perhaps too faithful-to the original text; presented mostly in dull boxes of first-person narration, it plods glacially for a full third of the work, until young Jim Hawkins finally boards the Hispaniola. His subsequent terrifying adventure certainly speeds up the pace, but the black-and-white artwork, while realistic and finely detailed, remains frustratingly static; moody and atmospheric, it seems better suited to Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. The shipboard details and contemporary accoutrements appear accurate and painstakingly researched, but the characters are sketchy and hard to distinguish behind the inky noir shadows and strained perspectives. Occasional images of startling beauty and subtle power testify to Hamilton's talent; it's a pity he didn't trust them to carry the story. (Graphic novel. 8+) (Kirkus Reviews)

Treasure Island - A Fantastic Read 5
At 45 I had never read this book but remember thinking it was depressing and grey, probably because there was a series which was shown on TV on a Sunday and Sunday always seemed depressing when we were young especially when we only had a BW television.. Now a primary school teacher I wanted my year 6 to study a classic adventure story full of description, suspense, anticipation and with real rounded characters.... and in Treasure Island I got it....Beautifully written and with brilliant character interaction it is an easy read ( but with some words which may need looking up.. unless you are a pirate). I could not put this book down, it created an escapism I have not experienced for a long time.

Swashbuckling adventure5
A fabulous book that has stood the test of time. Pirates, treasure and mutiny all make for a wonderful swashbuckling adventure. One fact that I wasn't aware of and that I found it interesting was learn that the story developed from a map that Stevenson and his stepson Lloyd Osbourne had drawn on holiday. I bet they never imagined that their tale would have grown to be so well loved for so many years

Brilliant5
It's a truly amazing book - it's hard to see how Stevenson succeeds in packing so many unforgettable characters and remarkable incidents into such a short book. Superb writing, not a word wasted.
