Not just for Metheny fans
The book contains a shed load of Metheny tunes written mainly in "Busker" style (- Chords and Melody). There's some bass clef but nearly all treble clef. No "Tab" clef here and if you want note-for-note solo transcriptions then you'll need to look elsewhere.
However, that's no bad thing as there is plenty here to get you into each tune. You need to have a good understanding of, or at least know how to work out chords but you wont need to be too advanced to get going and there's enough to enable you to play a satisfying interpretation of a tune just on piano. (My main intrument is guitar but I love playing these tunes on my piano).
This book wont make you solo like Pat, but playing someone else's solo is only satisying to yourself - unless you have a complete band at your command. What this book will do is allow you to understand the structure of the tunes and play through them at a level that'll entertain your friends. You'll even be able to get your girlfriend/mum saying "ooh that was nice!"
The bargain of a lifetime
Wow. This has to be one of the best purchases I have ever made. The selection is massive, and contains every single song you might ever want from the Metheny/Mays stable. If you've ever tried transcribing/arranging one of Metheny's songs, this will save days. Unlike most books of this type, this has clearly been written by the band thenselves - the chords are spot on (except in a couple of places where Mays has clearly hit a duff note in the recording, and the music is what was intended...). But the best part is just sitting down and playing along. Songs like First Circle and Half-life of Absolution suddenly become even more amazing (if such a thing is possible). Anyone who enjoys the music of PMG and associated trios etc. must buy this book, and I mean now.
A book in a million
Its sometimes so difficult to skick infron of your CD player, pausing at the right momment, trying vainly to transcribe a song, a chord progression or that ellusive solo. But at last this Metheny song book does that for you. Most of the tunes just come with the head, so it is still up to you to do the dirty and learn those nifty fingers.
A must for any serious Metheny-head and jazz sleazer.
