A wonderful grammar book
There are very few grammar books that you can pick up to consult and find it difficult to put down again. Anne Stilman has achieved this amazing feat in her book "Grammatically Correct". The book covers the basics of spelling, punctuation, grammar and style for writers and editors in an easily readable almost conversational style. The book itself has a well-designed layout, with lots of examples of what to do and what not to do, including some self-test questions. Passages (both serious and comic) from well-known past and contemporary writers to illustrate points is a nice touch. While the book is aimed at an American audience, most of the book is also relevant to a British audience and there are some explanations of differences in punctuation between the two Englishes. What a wonderful ungrammary grammar book!
its not English as we know it
Ok my first problem with this book was it American English, not UK English, so there are a few rules that translate wrong to UK English not to mention the spelling.
It is however very good, to the point, clear and easy to understand. It explains rules well and shows them used well.
Even with the above problems, I am glad bought it.
Grammar etc., US style
Stilman's book first appeared under a slightly different title in 1997. This edition, 'Now Pocket-Size' uses pocket-sized fonts, probably 8 pt.(and what seems like 6 pt. for the Index). In any case it makes an easy text into difficult reading. This is US grammar and punctuation, comprehensively outlined and a useful guide for those requiring to check on US usage. But little not found elsewhere. I would sooner go for Merriam-Webster's Pocket 'Guide to Punctuaion and Style'. At least I do not need to use strength 3 reading glasses.
