From a man who understands Photography like no other.
It is very easy to mention David Doubilet in the same breath as National Geographic as though that says it all. Of course his work has appeared in that illustrious magazine for many years and, well, perhaps it does.
Light in the Sea is a large coffee-table book packed with a collection of photographs taken in, on, around, above and, of course, below the surface of the sea. It is, however, far more than just another collection of photographs of fish, corals and other sea creatures - this is an complete exercise in what to aim for when taking similar photographs.
I am studiously avoiding such words as "Outstanding" or "Excellent" when describing the pictures contained in this book. This is because many outstanding and excellent photographers are found in other publications. David Doubilet is, however, a cut above the rest and in a class of his own. His photographs are beyond such descriptions.
There is far more to Underwater Photography than taking good photographs underwater and, having studied the many images in this book, I would suggest "Light in the Sea" is the template on which any aspiring underwater photographer should model their own abilities.
Sea Creatures are photographed from every position - with wide-angle lens and with macro-lens, from above the surface, from below the surface - and even from half in and half out of the water. Islands are shown with rows of coconut trees along the shores in the background and rows of corals underwater in the foreground - and all in a single photograph. Even that well-known rocky promontory in Egypt called Ras Mohammed is photographed from a new and exciting angle.
This is a book where every photograph is an abject lesson in photography with each one making the statement; "this is what you should aim to achieve when taking a photograph like this." This is a book where the Master has demonstrated his art to the student and I salute the author.

The magic of underwater photography!
This book is in one word: MAGIC!
And I believe it is the mother of modern UW photography. Many other photographers have risen out of Doubilet`s shadow - Roger Steene and Chris Newbert,to just mention two of them. But Doubilet still may be the most original and most special of them all. His work has appeared in many of National Geographics magazines, but this is the first book of his work. I just saw it in a store, and thought: "May be just yet another marine biology book. But I`ll have a look". And when I first opened it,I immidiatley decided to buy it. And I`d never regret it!Each picture is worth thousand words. All of them are so amazing -each has it`s own wonder. But I do have some favorites. Among them are an unbelievable picture of a stingray beneath the surface,an image of the Izu Peninsula waves at dawn,a closeup of an angelfish`s face, and an image of a great white shark, throwing it`s head towards the camera (at the size of this book,it almost feels real!).
The beauty of the coral reefs is almost indescribeable. As I have a taste for the unusual creatures,I really enjoy his images of strange underwater creatures, like the sea dragon or the giant spider crab.
Over all, this is a symphony of colors and shapes from one of the most mysterious and least known parts of our world - the ocean!
So if you want any good underwater art book, this one is highly recommended as a must-have one.
Doubilet has also written another photo book named "Water Light Time" and is currently writing "The Great Barrier Reef",scheduled for release this spring.
fabulous pictures
the photos in this book are absolutely fantastic and it is unbelieveable that pictures of this quality can be taken under water. i was encredibly impressed at how clear the pictures were and how they managed to get two puffer fish blown up right next to each other. the book consisted of large photos of marine fish and sharks with a small amount of writting. this is a facinating book and i would recommend this to anyone.
