Excellent for serious video editing - at a high price.
This is an excellent piece of kit for anyone who is serious about video editing. It allows the playback and editing of your videos without using your camera as a video player, which saves wear-and-tear on the camera, and is more convenient.
The built in screen and speakers are great for previewing your tapes.
I would recommend this unit to anyone, with just one reservation - the price. How Sony can justify such a high price is beyond me. At the end of the day all this unit has to do is play back the tapes - something which a sub-£300 camera does equally well, with the added functionallity of recording too! This really is a piece of kit for serious video editing only. It is very hard to justify it for the average home user.
Having said that, it a great gadget, and Amazon is the only place in the UK selling it for less than £1000 - many places are asking over £1200. Well done Amazon!
a mini marvel
this unit, has most of the features any mini dv editor or film maker would need, it is compatible with major editing systems such as avid express and final cut pro, and has the abillity to pay back, although not record, sonys semi broadcast quality dv cam format. ignore the built in editing features, as like most camcorders they are a joke, but in all othere respects this is a serious peice of kit. If you need rostrum images just load in your memory stick and load them on to the time line, it is that easy. The screen is clear and gives a good warm colour, although it is never going to be as good as a actual tv for colour balance it is a adequate and helpful feature, and of course if you have the space, you can connect a t.v. via the decks video out. I use my own personal unit as a viewing monitor connected to a variety of camera types, and making dv back ups of digi beta and beta sp or film recordings (as the tapes are cheaper). The biggest down side to the package, and it could be much worse, is that you have to cost in the price of a battery sepeartely as they are not included in the price. but other than that if you want to edit and use mini dv this is the unit you should get, and it cost a fraction of the price of its full sized dv brothers and sisters.
