Customer Reviews
A tough one
My familiarity with Wooten comes via his work with Bela Fleck and Steve Smith. He is an amzing bass playing, no two ways about that!
I'd read the reviews of this an decided to give it a go. As a result I have mixed feelings.
It is fundamentally a series of solo bass pieces and the man plays some astonishing stuff, real show pieces.
However, the "scat" type and random vocals really grate; by and large they appear quite unnecessary. Because of this I dropped a star or two.
Wooten's skill and prowess are extraordinary and this is, in some respects, a specialist CD being just a a bass "showcase".
I just try to edit out the vocal intros - it greatly improves the experience.
Magnificent
With "A Show of Hands", Victor Wooten has made something very near the ultimate bass experience. He makes the 4 string bass sound like an entire full fledged orchestra and displays bassplaying skills I would've thought impossible before hearing this album. He takes slapping and tapping to a new level with this CD. It will definitely leave all bassplayers impressed if not awestruck.
A 4 string bass is the only instrument used on the album bar vocals on some tracks, but it never gets boring or constipated. Non-bassplayers or even non-musicians who listen to this album often find it enjoyable as well. That fact alone is a great testament to mr Wootens amazing level of artistry and dedication to his instrument.
Wooten is The God of Bass
A simply superb and breathtaking album. This is a solo bass effort so probably would only interest die hard bass players. But this album really showcases the legend and proves why he is one the greatest bass players (alive) today. Very inspirational stuff!
Although there is a laugh out loud track (Me & My Bass Guitar) where he shows his MC Wooten skills with a bit of rapping that will make you cringe. Although he is one talented guy so I guess we can let him off.
If you're a bass player and want to be inspired, don't delay, buy today!!
