The Chronicles of Chrestomanci, Volume 1: Charmed Life/The Lives of Christopher Chant: 1 (Chronicles of Chrestomanci)The Chronicles of Chrestomanci, Volume 1: Charmed Life/The Lives of Christopher Chant: 1 (Chronicles of Chrestomanci) by Diana Wynne Jones
Buy new: £7.19 / Used from: £0.98
Witty, clever and unpredictable series. Conrad's fate is my personal favourite.
Mister Monday (The Keys to the Kingdom)Mister Monday (The Keys to the Kingdom) by Garth Nix
Buy new: £3.59 / Used from: £0.01
Very imaginative series aimed at the same sort of age group as Harry Potter. A little like The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but for kids.
Mortal EnginesMortal Engines by Philip Reeve
Buy new: £5.24 / Used from: £0.01
A stunning series. Much more intelligent than many books for young people yet exciting and packed with humourous touches.
The Magicians' Guild (Black Magician Trilogy)The Magicians' Guild (Black Magician Trilogy) by Trudi Canavan
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.01
Many teenage Potter fans are sure to love this series, however, I hated the uninspired plot and use of language. It features a school for wizards and secret passages if you like that kind of thing.
SabrielSabriel by Garth Nix
Buy new: £3.49 / Used from: £0.01
Better than Nix's other series in my opinion but lower on this list as Potter fans under 12 may not like it.
The Amulet of Samarkand (Bartimaeus Trilogy)The Amulet of Samarkand (Bartimaeus Trilogy) by Jonathan Stroud
Buy new: £5.24 / Used from: £0.01
A series that definitely improves as it goes on. I liked the quirky sense of humour and the way that the main characters are well thought out and developed.
Wolf Brother: Chronicles of Ancient Darkness Book 1 (Chronicles of Ancient Darkness)Wolf Brother: Chronicles of Ancient Darkness Book 1 (Chronicles of Ancient Darkness) by Michelle Paver
Buy new: £5.24 / Used from: £0.01
Potter fans of all ages should take a look at this fantasy tale set in the distant past. Doesn't have the humour of Potter but is still a very worthwhile read.
The Wind on Fire Trilogy: "The Wind Singer", "Slaves of the Mastery", "Firesong" (Wind on Fire)The Wind on Fire Trilogy: "The Wind Singer", "Slaves of the Mastery", "Firesong" (Wind on Fire) by William Nicholson

Weird and unsettling but brilliant and original all the same. Is more likely to make you think than laugh though.
The RopemakerThe Ropemaker by Peter Dickinson
Buy new: £5.24 / Used from: £0.01
Charming tale of a girl on a quest to find out how to protect her home.
His Dark Materials Gift Set: "Northern Lights", "The Subtle Knife", "The Amber Spyglass": His Dark MaterialsHis Dark Materials Gift Set: "Northern Lights", "The Subtle Knife", "The Amber Spyglass": His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman
Buy used from: £10.99
Most Potter fans will love this. I didn't really like the second and third books as the underlying anti-C.S.Lewis theme seemed a bit too petty.
Howl's Moving CastleHowl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
Buy used from: £2.75
I love this book to pieces. It has the wit, brilliant characters and unpredictable plot that I've come to expect from Diana Wynne Jones. Great for all ages.
The Seeing Stone (Arthur)The Seeing Stone (Arthur) by Kevin Crossley-Holland
Buy new: £5.24 / Used from: £0.01
A series set in the Middle Ages filled with historical detail. Features a boy finding out about the Arthurian legends and his connection to them. I thought it was delightful.
The Book of Dead DaysThe Book of Dead Days by Marcus Sedgwick
Buy new: £5.24 / Used from: £0.01
Mystery story set in a dark, gothic world. I prefered the sequel as I thought that the ending to this one was a bit weak.
MurkmereMurkmere by Patricia Elliott
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.01
Another atmospheric mystery tale with a great sequel. I was fascinated by the religious fantasy world in which it is set.

Magical adventure series. I was enchanted by it but it may seem a bit dated to some nowadays.
The Earthsea Quartet: "A Wizard Of Earthsea"; "The Tombs of Atuan"; "The Farthest Shore"; "Tehanu" (Puffin Books)The Earthsea Quartet: "A Wizard Of Earthsea"; "The Tombs of Atuan"; "The Farthest Shore"; "Tehanu" (Puffin Books) by Ursula Le Guin
Buy new: £7.14 / Used from: £1.43
A deep and thoughtful series featuring dragons, a wizard school and powerful magic. Probably too heavy-going for younger Potter fans though. It's much better than the rubbish live-action adaptation.
The Gift (Pellinor)The Gift (Pellinor) by Alison Croggon
Buy new: £5.19 / Used from: £3.39
I didn't really like this - it steals too many ideas from Tolkien and Le Guin in my opinion - but if you are teenager (or my mum!) and like fantasy you'll love it.
The Kingfisher Book of Mythology: Gods, Godesses and Heroes from Around the WorldThe Kingfisher Book of Mythology: Gods, Godesses and Heroes from Around the World
Buy used from: £24.99
Thought I'd include this as much of the background of Harry Potter is based in mythology and folk tales. I loved it as a child.
Cart and Cwidder (The Dalemark quartet)Cart and Cwidder (The Dalemark quartet) by Diana Wynne Jones
Buy new: £4.49 / Used from: £0.01
If you're a fan of Harry Potter you will love pretty much anything by Diana Wynne Jones, this fantastic series is no exception. It gets better as it goes through.
