Ten great Sci-Fi books...
The Stone Canal: A Fall Revolution NovelThe Stone Canal: A Fall Revolution Novel by Ken MacLeod
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.01
The first book in a truely great series, The "Fall Revolution" cycle is some of the best Sci-Fi I've read.
Schismatrix Plus: Includes Schismatrix and Selected Stories from CrystalSchismatrix Plus: Includes Schismatrix and Selected Stories from Crystal by Bruce Sterling
Buy new: £13.00 / Used from: £2.17
Brilliant. You haven't read great science fiction til you've read this book.
NeuromancerNeuromancer by William Gibson
Buy new: £3.99 / Used from: £0.22
Any lilst of Sci-Fi would feel a little empty without it. A llittle tired now, but still a good read.
The Diamond Age: Or, a Young Lady's Illustrated PrimerThe Diamond Age: Or, a Young Lady's Illustrated Primer by Neal Stephenson
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £1.75
Doesn't quite have the style or pacing of Snow Crash, but this is my favourite of Stephenson's Sci-Fi.
Ghost in the Shell (New Edition)Ghost in the Shell (New Edition) by Masamune Shirow
Buy new: £11.99 / Used from: £60.74
When I first read this, it was like seeing the future...
The Devil DeliveredThe Devil Delivered by Steven Erikson
Buy new: £10.00 / Used from: £119.54
Not just a writer of Fantasy, Erikson first proved his ability with some smaller, weirder books. This one is great Sci-Fi, very original.
Darwin's RadioDarwin's Radio by Greg Bear
Buy new: £5.49 / Used from: £0.01
I love Greg Bear's work, although they can be a bit trashy. Darwin's Radio is one of his best, alongside perhaps Hammer of God.
The Player of Games (The Culture)The Player of Games (The Culture) by Iain M. Banks
Buy new: £5.99 / Used from: £0.30
I'm not a huge fan of Iain M. Banks, but there are a few of his books I wouldn't be without - The Player of Games would be the foremost of those.
The Stars My Destination (S.F. Masterworks)The Stars My Destination (S.F. Masterworks) by Alfred Bester
Buy new: £5.49 / Used from: £1.33
Very dated - but you can see Bester foreshadowing all the stlyistic elements of contemporary sci-fi writers. Visionary.
Matter for Men (War Against the Chtorr)Matter for Men (War Against the Chtorr) by David Gerrold
Buy used from: £4.67
Hard to get, yes. Pulpy, yes. But the best sci-fi you'll read, with one of the most horrible threats to mankind ever imagined. Buy the whole series.
