Product Description

Since the 1920s, the radio set has been an important part of most people's lives. In the thirties and forties, the wireless was an important piece of furniture and a potent symbol of status; beautifully made floor-standing and table-top sets in veneered wood and trendy bakelite became the focal points of living rooms up and down the land. After the war, the emphasis began to change towards portability, and the change from valves to transistors in the 1960s changed the radio into a more useful, but far less interesting object.

Excellent book on Vintage Radio.5
I have followed Mr. Thompson's writings in "Radio Bygones" for sometime now so decided to purchase this book from Amazon. It's a very interesting book--so good in fact, I found I couldn't put it down. There are any number of vintage radios pictured in it's pages, together with brief descriptions of each. To save space, Mr. Thompson uses abbreviations for each description. Good, up to a point--abbreviations are described in the introduction, but not all are described! For instance, it wasn't until half way thru the book that I worked out what T.I. meant! And when a radio has shortwave coverage, the frequency coverage should have been listed, if possible. The book also has details of how to obtain vintage radios, restoration, etc. Highly recommended.
