Customer Reviews

Excellent book5
4 weeks ago Jess, my Border Collie was killed on the road; she chased a fox. I was so proud of her, she could do all sorts of clever things and people would stop and watch her, but she didn't have instant recall or emergency stop. I love her and I miss her dreadfully. I now have Skye, an 8 week old Border Collie. If I had known how to teach Jess right from the start she might be with me still. I am on the third reading of this book and I want to make sure that I educate Skye properly right from the start. I can't turn the clock back to have Jess with me again, but I will do my utmost to get everything right with Skye. This book doesn't tell you how to run your life, but it tells you what you MUST do to get a well mannered puppy and dog, and how to do it. That way you keep your dog safe, and it won't be a nuisance to others. Border Collies love learning and want to please, it is up to us to teach them properly - this book should help tremendously.
4 weeks on: Skye is not well mannered but I am still trying (so is she - very!). From 6 - 8 weeks she was virtually separated from her mother and the puppies had a free-for-all. The book assumes that you get the puppy in ideal circumstances and that you have loads of space for it to run around. Skye can now go out for a walk - thank goodness - I'm knackered!!!

Awful Book1
This is an awful book with outdated methods and an emphasis on dominating the puppy in every way. I read the first chapter and threw it in the bin, I would not recommend this book to anyone getting a puppy.

Good factual info but you have to sift for it3
Understanding and Training Puppies
Expected a concise practical book with clear cut info, however, much more editing is needed to make this book a truly practical guide. Too much repetition and deviation that confuses and it's such a shame as there are real good pointers in the book. You just have to sift them out.
