Product Description
The Border Collie is one of Britain's oldest strains of dog, bred to herd livestock. Despite its appealing qualities, it does not slip effortlessly into becoming a family pet, and accounts for almost half of all abandoned dogs in Britain. This text provides advice on how to choose your dog - whether a puppy or rescue collie - and how to rear, feed and train it.

Highly Recommended
Half the population of dogs in Rescue Homes are collie or collie crosses. If by reading this book a potential owner is educated or put off from owning this type of dog, the book has served its purpose. As a bonus, the author encourages both motivational and reward based methods.
As a collie owner myself, I found this book a comprehensive and informative guide high lighting the nature and needs of this type of dog. Preventative and training techniques of both innate and learned behaviours are well covered and give good common sense advice without glossing over the pit falls. Each collie is unique, its back-ground, environment, social skills and behaviour all play an important role in the development of this breed. I recommend this book for new or initiated collie owners.
Highly recommended
There have been many books written about Border collies but few with as much insight as this one. I find it hard to believe that your other reviewer here--Emma Way--and I have read the same book! It covers everything from how a collie's mind works to common behaviour problems. Too many people have bought a collie thinking they arrive automatically trained or will be easy to live with without effort. They are very intelligent dogs but have been bred as working dogs for centuries, a fact that many people overlook, only to discover once they grow and their natural instincts emerge.
A collie can become a beautiful, obedient companion or a neurotic and troubled liability...This will depend on how much you, as the owner, have learnt to understand the breed and how it was bred.
Carol Price's understanding of how a collie's mind works, plus her advice on how to train collies and handle their natural needs and instincts within a domestic setting/existence makes this book essential reading for both new people to the breed and people who have owned collies before. So popular has this book become in collie circles that I believe it has already gone into its third reprint. I have owned Border collies for many years and I highly recommend this book as one of the best on the breed I have ever come across.
Please read this book!!
I am due to collect my BC puupy soon and am trying to get as much information on their behaviour as I can beforehand. This book is fantastic. It explains the reasons behind their behaviour, and is a good step-by-step guide to Collie puppy training. It also covers rescue dogs. I will definitely keep this on my bookshelf as I'm sure that I will consult it throughout my dog's development.
