The oystercatchers
This is one of the most affecting and marvellously written books I have ever read. Part of it is set in Pembrokeshire, and part of it in Norfolk, and being from Norfolk myself, it was an added pleasure to read about familiar places, described with an extremely lyrical and observant eye. The story of Moira and the elements, the word love and all of it's meanings. The story of glorious, sweet little Amy, and her lust for life, climbing trees, picking flowers, and poking spiders webs with twigs. The tragedy and complete waste of a girl's life, and the sense of guilt and loss. The story of relationships, a husband, and lonely aunt, loving parents. A story of travel, and nature, and above all, the sea. This book held me fast, from beinning to end, and what an end. The tears were unstoppable, I will never forget this book.
A rare treat
This was a truly remarkable read - it was beautifully written and superbly observed (if that is the right description for fiction). I loved Eve Green by Susan Fletcher so I picked this book up without paying attention to the story. I am not sure if I had been told it was a book about 2 sisters, one in a coma and the other telling her life story and regretting her regrets, that I would have picked it up. If you are reading this and wondering well 'pick it up - you won't put it down!'.
I felt as if I was in a room listening to Moira and watching Amy as she sleeps on. The pages turn and turn - it is a quick and easy read that evokes many emotions.
Loved it
I just wanted to say that I agree with all the positive things written about this book
It took a little time to get into, but was well worth the effort.
Beautifully written and although I agree that Moira was difficult to like, I sympathised with her and she didn't like hereself a whole lot.
I now look forward to reading Eve Green with happy anticipation
