A remarkably fine comedy
I heartily recommend both series of this remarkably fine comedy.
You can get the details from the many other approving reviews here on the Amazon site, so I'll confine myself to mentioning a few extra points.
First, the acting is unusually good. The ensemble playing is strong. The characters have real depth. It's unfair to single anyone out for special praise in such a fine cast, but I can't resist drawing your attention to three standouts. Callum Blue's hilarious portrayal of the flawed, feckless, vulnerable, lovable Mason just gets better and better. Right up there with it is Cynthia Stevenson's perfectly judged, evolving performance as the perplexed, grieving, stoical, bereaved Joy Lass. And who could forget Christine Willes' realisation of the determinedly-cheerful, lonely, kind-hearted Delores Herbig? Delores has an artificial manner which must present a tough challenge for an actor, but Willes brings it off perfectly and makes Delores utterly believable.
Second, the direction and production are first class. The scripts are witty and imaginative. The intercutting is breathtaking. Take a look at the scene in which Mason is searched for drugs at the airport, with those sly cuts to the intent face of the police dog. Not a word is spoken, but you'll rock with laughter.
Third, this is a richly-detailed dramatic product and the many supporting roles are strong. Whether it be Crystal, the deadpan secretary with a past, or the man-mad Misty, such characters are the source of much merriment.
Fourth, when the credits roll, don't miss the music. Each episode ends with a different composition and the quality is uniformly high.
And finally, all hail Ellen Muth's wonderful, growly George.
Well worth a watch
I bought this DVD purely on the topic and the number of great reviews it had received, having never heard or seen it before.
I wasn't overly impressed with the initial pilot - I wasn't particularly keen on 'George' the main charater, but I persevered and all the characters have since grown on me, it is a great programme and very thought provoking. It's compulsive viewing, and very well written, I am about half way through the series and can't wait to watch the rest. It's a 'must have' for anyone's DVD collection, I will be buying series 2 very shortly.
A cross between "Reaper" & "Six Feet Under"
Whilst browsing here on Amazon this was "recommended" to me in "MY STORE" clearly based on the previous searches I had done. I had searched both for REAPER and SIX FEET UNDER and when this popped up I had never even hear of it, but Amazon's automatic recommendations were bang on the money this time as this show is best described as a cross between these 2 shows.
After reading the synopsis and just viewing the box art work ( a picture of Death blowing a huge pink gum bubble) I know this was the sort of quirky, off the wall thing I like so I took a complete chance and bought it "blind" so to speak.
I have never been more pleased with a purchase! Rather than go into lengthy detail about the plot & characters, all you need to know that after watching just the first 2 episodes I was enjoying it so much that I immediately came back and have now ordered the second series.
Trust me....take a chance......
