This has got to be one of the BBC’s comedic institutions. Maybe it did lose its way a bit during the latter years but there were still laughs a-plenty to keep this as one of the nation’s favourites.

A comedy set in a back-street shop “up North” might not sound like a recipe for a comedy classic, but who couldn’t fall in love with Arkwright and Granville? Still frequently shown on TV today.

Like a “dumbed down” version of “A League Of Gentlemen”, the characters are nonetheless just as weird but ever so funny. Oh, and it gave the nation a new catchphrase: “yeah-but-no-but-yeah”
