very good
I have several external hard drives including the freecom tough drive and now the western digital 320gb. Like the freecom, The western digital is ready to use straight out the box, the only fault i can see with it is the USB cable does stick out quite a bit. compare this to the freecom device in which the usb tucks neatly in to the top of the device. If they both cost the same; i would choose the Freecom over this. however if you are looking for a cheap, reliable device, you wont have any major problems with this.
Quality kit :o)
Having owned both the 60Gb and 160Gb (black) WD Passport drives with no issues, I was happy to upgrade to the 320Gb as my need for more storage increased and the price came down. As the red version was on offer (sixty pounds), I plumped for this but was quite shocked when it did arrive as it has pink edges which make it look very er..."Will and Grace". Luckily mine spends 99.5% of it's life in my safe but macho corporate execs may want to get the black one....
My PC and laptop, both running Win Vista SP1 picked it up straight away but the WD Sync software failed to install on either. I was half expecting this and so I low-level formatted the drive (default NTFS) to free up all available space (took over an hour) and ran Windows Vista backup. This backs up the entire disk to RAR files but my test to restore using the same software failed. Plan C was to copy over my Documents, Pictures, Favourites and Music folders one by one, as I have done monthly for years now. A bit more painful but reliable, and instantly verifiable. Another reviewer has mentioned True Image which I shall look into or perhaps Norton Ghost which I used successfully at work for many years.
Anyway, as far as the disk is concerned, it's another well built bit of kit, small and sleek and no mains adapter is a great advantage for the traveller and desk jockey alike. It fits nicely in my safe though I'd recommend a case if you take it away a lot. The USB cable is short but ok for me. Would have been 5 stars if it wasn't for the poor software and pink bits - you have been warned !
Simple and to the point
There was a time when I backed up my 70Mb Dell onto 750Kb floppies. It took hours, and thank goodness I never had to try to retrieve the backup. Times change.
I needed a simple solution to backing up my four different computers, two Microsoft windows, a Macintosh and a Linux portable. Of course I don't bother backing the operating systems, they come and go, just my user documents. For all systems the My Passport went as smoothly as butter. Simple and to the Point. 320G was just fine for this, but I would like to get a Terabyte next, just to say I have one. Times change.
