Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
This career-spanning box of three CDs and a DVD celebrates a legacy that looms larger than that of any blues-rocking guitarist since Jimi Hendrix. Despite fears that a series of posthumous releases had depleted the Stevie Ray Vaughan vaults, previously unreleased gems dominate the selection. Highlights extend from Vaughan's swaggering apprenticeship with Paul Ray and the Cobras to slash-and-burn concert performances from the final month of his life. There are obligatory dips into the songbooks of Hendrix and Buddy Guy, appearances on MTV Unplugged and Austin City Limits and instrumental interplay with brother Jimmie Vaughan and tour-mate Jeff Beck. Though his guitar never loses its flame-thrower intensity, the set documents his progression from the show-off licks of the young "Stevie Rave On" into a fully rounded artistry of soulful depth. --Don McLeese

The way to make a box set5
This exceptional box set, with a large, well-illustrated and well-written booklet enclosed in a "book binding" which holds all four discs, is one of the best of its kind.

It doesn't just feature the hits, but, like a good box set should, it genuinely adds to Stevie Ray Vaughan's legacy, featuring literally dozens of previously unreleased live recordings, alternates and outtakes.

"SRV" includes three compact discs with almost four hours of music, and one DVD EP which contains six previously unissued songs from the 1989 Austin City Limits show, in Dolby stereo and surround mixes, and with interactive menus.

The music on the three CDs span 1977-1990, and includes instrumentals, cover versions, and originals, showcasing both Stevie Ray the bluesman and Stevie Ray the rock singer. Almost all of his best songs are here, including "I'm Cryin'", "Pride And Joy" (live and studio versions), "Empty Arms", "Cold Shot", "Dirty Pool", "Love Struck Baby", and a superb live rendition of "Texas Flood". And "Look At Little Sister" is here, too - albeit on the DVD. In fact, the only really significan omission is Vaughan's rendition of Doyle Bramhall's "Life By The Drop".

The excellent 1980 recording of Otis Rush's hit "All Your Love (I Miss Lovin')", from the album "In The Beginning", is also here (magnificent, syncopated drumming by Chris Layton), as is Vaughan's reading of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child". And the rare or previously unavailable cuts include Albert King's "Crosscut Saw", "Hug You, Squeeze You", the outtakes "Boilermaker" and "Shake 'N Bake", and the funky, piano-driven "Don't Stop By The Creek, Son", where Stevie Ray acts as a sideman to Johnny Copeland.

This is a rare thing - a box sets which both manages to include (almost) all the artist's best material, and add something new and genuinely interesting even to those fans who already own all the artist's previously released albums. Magnificent!

essential addition to any blues collection, totally full-on!5
Stevie Ray Vaughan really does rate among the greatest blues guitarists of all time, and this blistering box set captures both the music, and the pictures of the maestro. Three cd`s jam packed with solid blues give a taste of the mans genius. The music covers his best work 77-90 and is largely made up of previously unreleased versions. In my opinion srv`s 10 minute live version of "voodoo chile" could stand up against the best. 54 tracks (36 unissued) and a 30 min live DVD adds up to a really good deal. The sound reproduction is excellent and the DVD crystal clear.I have several srv cd`s in my collection already but this set now takes pride of place.

Phenomenal5
I bought this a few weeks ago and have been playing the three audio CD's pretty reguarly since. Finally, a friend invited me over to check out the DVD on his new player. Woah! And double Woah! SRV guy was an outrageously assured guitar player. His command of the thing was total. He nails version of "Voodoo Chile" and "Mary Had a Little Lamb" in ways you have to see. These tracks have been re-released in a number of different versions, but now they've been coupled with the visuals of himself and the tightest rhythm section imaginable rolling through them, well... How much more of this does Epic have vaulted away? Hopefully bucketloads. Bring it on!
