Witness blistering performances by the Master!
As soon as I saw that this DVD was going to be released soon, it immediately made it to my 'must have' list! And now I finally have it in my hands and have watched it three times already.
The first thing that struck me was the amazing front cover artwork. I could sit down and watch the cover for hours. The menu artwork is inspired by the front cover artwork. Everytime you click on a menu item, the artwork animates, disappears and another artwork appears as the background to the submenu. The artwork on this DVD is simply brilliant and tastefully done.
The DVD itself is made of two of Malmsteen's most flamboyant live recorded concerts: Live in Japan 85 and Live In Leningrad 89. The first thing that amazes me is the audio visual quality. The remastered sound has lost none of it's rawness. I mean when you watch Japan 85, you would have thought that you were attending this concert! There are a few cheesy animation that was done at the time (which was probably cool then) otherwise the image quality is very clear. The band puts on an amazing display of musicianship with Jeff Scott Soto on vocals, Marcel Jacob on drums, the Anderson brothers on drums and keyboards and the Master himself on guitars.
On Live In Leningrad, you can tell that Malmsteen has now become more famous than when Japan 85 was recorded. Compared to Japan 85, in Leningrad, Malmsteen has got a huge stage to perform on and has Joe Lynn Turner singing his songs! There is a very elaborate and visual lightshow as well as the fireworks and smoke machine for additional effect. Having a big stage gives the band more space to express themselves and the execution is flawless as usual. The restored image and sound quality has to be heard and seen to be believed. Whoever has reworked those footage has done an excellent job.
The only downside to both concerts for me is when Malmsteen starts going crazy when he does his 10minute solo. The solo itself is breathtaking until at around 6 minutes into the solo when he starts doing all sorts or weird noises with his guitar that probably only makes sense to him! But he is a genius and genuises are usually crazy! So we'll forgive him for that!
This DVD is absolutely worth getting on the strength of those two live performances. However, the bonus material makes it even more interesting to acquire. First off their are four videos of: Bedroom Eyes (that's my favourite video of the lot), Heaven Tonight, I'll See The Light and Save Our Love. Then there are two Malmsteen masterclasses where you can 'see' exactly which notes he is playing. So that is a bonus that guitar players will welcome but most non musicians will find totally useless. But still the non-musicians will still delight in watching the two videos. And finally there is a 30 minute interview with Malmsteen which was recorded in 2006 where he answers a lot of interesting questions and gives you an insight into his amazing career from the beginning to now.
I would personally recommend buying this DVD from one of the masters of the electric guitar because he turns out to be highly entertaining and will surely teach you a thing or two!
O.k. but keep your vhs tapes
This is a great dvd, two concerts, promos, interview, picture quailty is improved, but each concert is minus five tracks from the original vhs release, total of ten tracks missing, as it stands on its own its probably five star rating but for those who have the vhs releases don't trash them.
Far Beyond The Sun "Magic" YJM
Another great DVD from the master of the Stratocaster Yngwie Johann Malmsteen. Two great live concerts from 1985 and 1989 (Live in Japan) and (Trial by Fire in Leningrad). A 30min stunning interview of Yngwie and he talks about his solo sucsess right from on how he started playing the guitar. Now here's a chance for the Yngwie fans to have a (jam along)with two great video tracks in TAB for you to master the riffs and solos from (You Don't Remember, I'll never forget and I'll see the light tonight).
I have to say it i really enjoyed jamming along on guitar to these great songs. Now there are 3 bonus videos also what a good treat this DVD is for you. The DVD cover as a super photo of Yngwie back in the 80's Yngwie's guitar solos from both the live! concerts are in full power in which it sends goose bumps right up your spine. This DVD is in 5.1 digital surround sound which makes it even better, and even better still the interview of Yngwie was conducted in 2006. So all in all this DVD of the master in his flamboyant guitar styles of Neo-Classical metal makes this DVD a must have for your collection Enjoy!!
