Synopsis
Suitable for children aged 4-10years Story about therapeutic post-adoption work with adopted children to help keep memories of their first family alive and understand why their birth parents could not look after them Nutmeg is a small red squirrel first met in the popular Nutmeg Gets Adopted (BAAF, 2001). Now he is a little older, he wants to know more about why his birth parents couldn't look after him and his younger brother and sister properly and keep them safe. Nutmeg's social worker is asked to come and tell him more about the circumstances around his move into care (along with his siblings). She helps him record memories - both good and bad - of his birth parents and work through some of the angry feelings Nutmeg has for them. Moving on to affirmative activities such as lighting candles for all the people Nutmeg loves, drawing his life story in chronological order on a large sheet of paper, and creating a family tree are some of the techniques used to help pin down the early memories which are so important for the adopted child's sense of identity and self esteem. As with earlier titles in this series, the accompanying guidelines explain the processes to help the adult working with the child and make the point that the techniques can be used with children at any stage of their life in care.
