A must-have book5
For anyone with the remotest interest in the subject (how the 'abolition' of the transatlantic slave trade didn't really end slavery. And, how many Africans - mainly from Sierra Leone -were duped into going to Jamaica to work on the fomer slave plantations as indentured labourers. What they found was that all the odds were stacked against them and that not a lot had changed from the 'bad, old days'. Many who were promised an opportunity to return found that 'free' passage back home at the end of their contracts was an empty promise. For some, it seemes life was worse in the new 'freedom'.
Schuler presents the facts and figures in great style.
The book is brilliantly researched and written in a way that makes it a great read and not a dry, academic tome.
For many Jamaicans (and Sierra Leoneans) this book could prove to be an eye-opener. And, give them an insight into their roots.
A must for academic and non-academic alike. This book fills many gaps in that particular history. Buy it, read it, love it and treasure it.
