Customer Reviews
Good value package
All-In-One Driving Test 2009/2010 Edition is an excellent value package that could prove invaluable to anyone about to take their driving test. It can also be a useful catch-up for those of us who took our test some while ago - a lot has changed over the last few years and this package is bang up to date!
Its main competition comes from Focus Multimedia's Driving Test Success All Tests 2009/2010 Edition which is a very similar package at a very similar price. Amazon has very comprehensive Product Descriptions of both products and would be well worth reading through.
Having had a look at this product from Avanquest and the previous version of the Focus product, I would rate the Focus product just above this one; but there is really little to separate them. This software will copy itself onto your hard drive which may or may not appeal to you - could be convenient or annoying! If you are currently paying for driving lessons for yourself, or your teenager, then the price of these packages is pretty insignificant by comparison and you could probably run to both and choose the one that is most suitable for your own needs. Well worth it if it helps to pass that test!
I will give this Avanquest product five stars as it does represent excellent value for money for what you get. However, I would recommend at least looking at the Focus package as well as that would be my personal first choice - although some Amazon reviewers have had problems with the latest version.
First impressions let down by second impressions
Unusually, this product insists on copying itself completely to your hard drive, so make sure you have 3GB free. I don't know why you can't just run it from the DVD with just a few files copied to the computer, but to be honest I prefer it this way, as there's no distracting noise from the disc drive when running it. If you have Vista, it installs an icon on the left of the taskbar, which opens up the menu with one click. If you have Vista like I do, then firstly my commiserations, and secondly everything said in this paragraph will help you to get back the irritating amount of time you lose every time you have to sit through Vista loading.
This is a fully windows embracing product, unlike others I have seen, meaning that not only can you minimise it and do other things as the need arises, but you can have more than one module open at once. It is extremely easy to use, and - of course - has everything you need to know, including the hazard perception tests and show me tell me.
But if only it was that simple. The product is fairly insistent that you register with them, and after spending some time with this product I now know why. I was doing a mock theory test and the window kept flickering annoyingly. Couple that with the text size that you can't seem to enlarge, and it started to give me a headache. Then, 27 questions into the 50 question test a box appeared to tell me the program had stopped working. And now I don't know whether I got the right answers or not, so it did me more harm than good. I had to start again, but with the window constantly flickering I couldn't stand to look at it anymore. I have two choices now - contact customer support or go back to my old driving test software that works and doesn't try and influence me into subscribing to its own driving lessons. Guess which one I'll do.
Avenquest vs. Focus Multimedia
Competition in the "at home learn to drive" software market from Avenquest, much like the excellent Driving Test Success ALL Tests 2009/2010 Edition (PC) and in truth there is little to separate them.
Even if you are skeptical about the idea of learning to drive on your PC, or think this is just for help with the written tests, you are quite wrong, and it provides a valuable tool for new drivers, as well as learners.
I'm a huge advocate of road safety, and wish I had seen something like this when I was learning to drive!
Pretty much everything is covered in meticulous detail, including in depth clips and questions for the hazard theory.
I also love the "Show me, tell me" video section where mock test videos are run to help you identify errors and get to know all of the cars features.
For the price these are a great investment, and if your teenager spends as much time on this as they do on Facebook, they'll be a lot less accidents in the future.
I wouldn't especially recommend this one over the Focus product as they are both very good, not identical, but all the relevant stuff is covered in both. Considering the price of professional lessons, these software packages are also ridiculously cheap.
