Superb Album that gets better with age!
I originally bought this LP about about 13 or so years ago, mainly because I heard the song "Torture" at my friends house and liked what I heard! It also had the added bonus of a duet song with Mick Jagger ("State Of Shock") so I thought I should check it out. When I first got it I wasn't too impressed to tell the truth, mainly because I found it hard to adjust to the vocal styles of the other Jacksons. However it didn't take long before all that changed.
"Wait" co-produced by Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (Of TOTO fame) is a typical 80's rock track with a catchy beat graced with ad-libs by Michael at the end. "One More Chance" is a beautiful ballad sung in an appropriately delicate vocal style by Randy. "State Of Shock" (feat. Mick Jagger) is a simple yet superb track which has the distinction of being the track on the album that you always manage to hear something new on! "The Hurt" Co-written by Michael and Randy is another strong track with a good instrumental arrangement, Randy's falsetto is excellent, steady and spine-tingling, as are the harmonies at the the end of the song, definitely one of the group highlights of the album. The closing track on the album is "Body" sung by Marlon. This song has a great guitar hook that belies Marlon's ordinary vocal style (shame about the video! )
The album does have its setbacks, "We Can Change The World" (Tito's Track) is, although very meaningful, highly forgettable. The same can be said for the awful "Be Not Always" (Michael's only solo composition on the album). The first verse of which seems like an exercise to see how many times the word "always" can be repeated without the listener going nuts!
I can't help but thinking that if these weak tracks were replaced by the electrifying Jermaine & Michael duet "Tell Me I'm Not Dreamin'", Jermaine's "Dynamite" and "Do What You Do" (which all appeared on Jermaine's eponymous Arista LP released that same year (1984)) Then this album would be 10 times better that it already is! However when all is said and done "VICTORY" is on the whole an unforgettable and solid effort by the worlds greatest ever R&B/Pop act...BUY IT!
Best jackson's album!!
The year was 1984 and michael`was already a megastar with the sucess of thriller. So expectations for victory were very high and it was expected to be as sucessfull as thriller. But it didnt do nearly as well as expected and was considered a faliure. But it is the jacksons biggest selling album and for a good reason.... Its outstanding! The standout songs are the track 'torture' which is a great duet with michael and jermaine and is the second best song on the album. State of shock a duet with michael and mick jagger is a great rock song and the best on the album. And even one of michael's best songs. And finally body sung by marlon is a great song and very catchy. And sounds like wanna be startin somethin from thriller! This is the jacksons best album and get's better every time you listen to it! So if your a jackson's fan or michael jackson fan buy this.
last with the king
Victory was The Jacksons 5th album for Epic records. Originally released in 1984 this is the last of the classic jacksons albums. This came out 1 year after the mayhem which ensued the "Thriller" album and it was not known if Michael would re-team with his brothers for another album, fortunately he did and although this isnt as good as the previous jacksons album "Triumph" it's still a strong album. The main differnce with this album against the other Jacksons albums is this is the first album since the motown days that jermaine Jackson has been on. After leaving motown as a solo artist in 1982,jermaine was free to rejoin his brothers on the Epic label,so this is infact the jackson 6 if you will as younger brother Randy who replaced jermaine in the group is still present.
Victory takes on a slightly more pop feel than their previous albums which is a disappointment but the album does grow on you quite a bit and it also has a couple of jackson classics on. The boys again share songwriting duties between themselves but unlike the previous albums where michael wrote or co-wrote the bulk of material,it only features 2 michael compostions in the songs "Be not always" a rather tepid-dull ballad which is the albums biggest disappointment and first single "state of shock ft mick jagger..again a rather disappointing track. The best tracks are the killer "Torture" written by the underated jackie jackson and randy jacksons penned "one more chance" an amazing ballad..this track was covered 10 yrs later by sister janet! the other good tracks are the toto penned "Wait" and marlon jacksons "Body"..the other tracks are ok but not amazing.
This was to be the last of the jacksons albums for some 5 years or so before they reunited in 89 for the "2300 jackson st" album which flopped and only had michael briefly on 1 track. Of course michale became the biggest star on the planet ad the boys would not record again which is a shame as they are talented guys too.
