Synopsis
In ICE PRINCESS, a brainy high school student makes a sparkling transformation into a world-class figure skater. Casey Carlyle (Michelle Trachtenberg) doesn't have any friends, having sacrificed a social life in order to fulfil the high-minded expectations of her uptight mother, Joan (Joan Cusack). But that begins to change when she embarks on a science project that involves her lifelong dream of becoming an ice skater. After finding herself in skates of her very own, Casey realizes that she has a rare talent. With the help of former prodigy turned hardnosed coach, Tina (Kim Cattrall), Casey finally blossoms into the person that she's always wanted to be. Unfortunately, this person is the opposite of the person her mother wants her to be, putting a nearly unbearable strain on Casey. Fortunately, Tina's hunky son Teddy (Trevor Blumas) and daughter Gen (Hayden Panettiere) are there to provide support. As the regional championships approach, Casey must find the strength to put her conflicts with her mother out of her mind and skate like she's never skated before. Director Tim Fywell (I CAPTURE THE CASTLE) deftly balances comedy and drama to create a film that the whole family can enjoy.
Customer Reviews
Great skating, not very original storyline
This film, in my opinion, has a very weak storyline and would benefit from some funnier jokes. The plot is not very original and although it is one of the worst films I have seen for acting I realise that it was also aimed at wowing the audience with iceskating. This is where the film truly delivers. The skating and the moves almost made me tempted to go to the local ice rink. The actors (or their stunt doubles)must have required so much talent and energy. The only reason that I have given this film three stars is not for the acting, but to the sporting talent. Some of the actors/actresses would be far better off in the winter olympics as opposed to acting.
Ice Princess-Deceptively named
Although the title may suggest a movie aimed at children, this is an enjoyable family movie.
The main character, although mildy unbelievable in places, is well written and,if watched with an open mind, this movie can be enjoyed for what it is. A touching story of pair a girls pursuing their dreams despite overbearing mothers.
The ice-skating scenes are exciting, and some of the falls look genuinely painful. This movie is recommended for anyone who enjoys watching figure skating, or movies with moments that almost make you cry, or movies where people find happiness.
Well worth watching.
"No, Mom. I'm giving up on your dream. I'm going after mine."
"Ice princess" is one of those blockbuster movies you cannot help but love. It certainly doesn't give you lots of food for thought, but it is entertaining, has good music, and at the end makes you feel happy you watched it. This movie will appeal mainly to young girls, but also to those adults that have nothing against Disney movies if they are well done.
The main character is Casey Carlyle (Michelle Trachtenberg), the classical "A" student with not too many friends and a strict mother (Joan Cusack) that encourages her to study more and more, so she can earn a scholarship and go on studying. The problem is that to earn the scholarship she wants, Casey will have to find a project in which she can put a little of herself. Even though choosing what to do seems difficult at first, Casey realizes that she can combine her love for ice skating with physics, using physics to improve the skills of talented ice-skaters. In order to work on her project Casey will have to spend some more time on the ice rink, a place where she will discover an incredible talent she didn't know about, friends waiting to be discovered, and maybe even love. However, Casey will also have to make some choices, for example what and who she wants to be.
All in all, I can say that I loved "Ice princess". It was no more and no less than what I expected, a charming movie that provides good entertainment for children and teens, and allows adults to forget about everyday problems for almost 2 hours. Of course, recommended :)
